Greenwich, CT
(Sept. 19, 2012) – Westfield State spoiled Purchase's home-opening match Wednesday at the Panthers' new home course, Tamarack Country Club, in nearby Greenwich.
Westfield topped Purchase 322-330, winning by eight strokes.
“The guys hit the ball well from tee to green but struggled on the fast greens,” explained Purchase head coach
James Alfredo of the final. “It is probably the toughest course that we will play all year, with a slope of 139.
“But it was a good test that will prepare us for our upcoming matches at Bethpage Red and Sycamore Country Club,” he added.
The Panthers were led by captain
Ian Cumming (JR/Hartford, CT), who shot an 81. He was followed by
Mike Wyckoff (SO/Queens, NY) (82) and
Rory Mazur (FR/Ridgefield, CT) (82),
Brett Conger (FR/Freeville, NY) (82) and
Miller Lulow* (SR/New York, NY) (95).
Westfield Chrie Miele was superb, shooting a 79 to pace the field. Rory Wilkowicz (82), Joe Cooper (82), Tyler Beaudry (85) and Austin Ahmed (79) rounded out the scoring for the visitors.
Looking for a bounce back performance, the Panthers will return to action on Sept. 28 at Farmingdale State in their first Skyline Conference match of the season. Purchase, which splits time on two home courses (Tamarack and Old Oaks), has one home contest remaining on the fall schedule, slated for Oct. 16 at Old Oaks in Purchase.
