Yonkers, NY
(Sept. 22, 2012) – Lightning struck twice in Yonkers Saturday night – both figuratively and literally.
In the figurative sense, Purchase's
Andres Romero (JR/Port Chester, NY) scored two goals for the Panthers in an impressive 4-0 Skyline Conference win over his former team, the College of Mt. St. Vincent, before the real lightning called off the remainder of the game at Tibbetts Brook Park with 19:34 left in the second half.
Romero, who transferred in this fall from the Dolphins, and
Junior Sanguina (SO/White Plains, NY) led the way for the Panthers. Sanguina, who has recorded goals in three straight games, finished the week with four goals in three games. As a team, Purchase finished the week going 2-0-1, earning its first conference win in the process.
Purchase (4-2, 1-1 Skyline) got off to a fast start, scoring two goals inside the first six minutes of play.
Blaise Bourgeois (JR/Rochester, NY) got the eventual game-winner when he cleaned up the rebound of a blocked shot by
Kevin Riveros (FR/Port Chester, NY) at the 4:11 mark of the contest.
The Panthers quickly doubled the lead at 5:39 when Romero took a centering pass from Sanguina and drove a shot home to the center of the net. The hosts then found themselves trailing by three in the 35th minute when Sanguina connected off a feed from
Chris Beckett (JR/Yorktown Heights, NY).
The Dolphins would tighten things up coming out of halftime until Romero closed out the scoring with his second of the night in the 65th minute. He dribbled through the backline and cashed in his sixth of the season for the Panthers.
Keeper
Dylan Hyman (SO/San Francisco, CA) earned the shutout after making three stops for the visitors.
Overall on the night, Mt. St. Vincent was outshot by Purchase, 18-7. The Mount dropped to 2-2-1 overall on the season and to 0-1-0 in league play.
The Panthers will look to build off the key conference win next time out, when Purchase returns to action at SUNY Maritime Friday night.
