Purchase women's basketball ended Old Westbury's seven-game win streak Saturday at the Clark Athletic Center.
The loss put a stop to Old Westbury's (11-7) surge, moving the home Panthers to 6-3 in conference action while Purchase (10-9) improved to 5-4 – a huge turnaround under first-year
head coach Kellianne Dunlay.
Both teams exchanged leads four times in the opening 14:43 and Clarissa Gallagher's triple put Old Westbury up 19-8 with 14:30 remaining. Raven Pentz gave Old Westbury its largest lead of the game off a jumper with 12:03 left for a 16-10 advantage.
Purchase answered with a 13-2 run from 7:52 to 2:45 to go up 31-23.
Old Westbury took a 34-31 lead into the break after answering with an 11-0 run to close out the half.
Purchase chipped away at the slim deficit in the in the opening minutes of the second half to take a 35-34 lead on an
Elizabeth Osowiecki (FR/Franklin Square, NY) layup. A
Jessica Biggs (SR/Nanuet, NY) layup gave Purchase a 39-36 lead while Old Westbury's DeAndra Scott tallied the next four points to give her team a 40-39 lead with 13:27 remaining.
Shortly later, Purchase rallied to go ahead 47-41 behind an 8-0 run from 12:18 to 10:18 to grab the lead for good.
Following a Scott jumper with 9:08 showing on the clock, a
Jess Lindsay (JR/Rochester, NY) jumper sparked an 8-0 run, as Purchase took a 56-46 lead with7:03 remaining.
Nevertheless, Old Westbury answered with a 9-0 run to pull within one point, 56-55.
But it was Purchase Panther day at the Clark Athletic Center, not an Old Westbury afternoon.
In the end, Purchase outscored Old Westbury 10-3 in the final 2:36 to secure the victory.
Scott's third straight double-double of 23 points and 15 rebounds paced Old Westbury. Gallagher followed with 10 points and struggled shooting the ball, hitting just 3-of-13 from the floor.
Lindsay (6-17 FG) and
Talia Beaulieu (SR/Waldorf, MD) (6-19 FG) both poured in 15 points to lead Purchase to victory. Beaulieu ripped down 10 rebounds and
Lineker St.Hilaire (SO/Wyandanch, NY) added nine.
Alexis Billups (SR/Chester, NY) registered 10 points, seven steals, six rebounds and five assists.
Purchase is now in fourth place and on pace for the postseason. The top four teams will advance to the conference tournament in late February.
