Purchase, NY (Nov. 25, 2013) – Instead of relying on one or two players to push it to victory, the Purchase College women's basketball team received important contributions from up and down the lineup in a wire-to-wire 52-45 win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Monday evening at home.
Lineker St.Hilaire (JR/Wyandanch, NY) had 15 points, leading a trifecta of Panther scoring from Jazmin Garcia (JR/Peekskill, NY) and Elizabeth Osowiecki (SO/Franklin Square, NY), who finished with 12 points apiece.
Purchase trailed USMMA, 21-17, at the half but returned to the paint eager for a comeback.
Terrorizing USMMA on the interior was Garcia, who collected all 12 of her points in the second period, while pulling down seven of the 30 rebounds corralled by the Panthers.
Garcia was benched in the first half after two personal fouls within the first four minutes of play.
Willing to take it into the lane time and time again, the Panthers went to the charity stripe on 27 occasions, making good on 10 of those attempts. Purchase shot 21 of 58 (36.2 percent) from the field in the win.
USMMA junior Demi VanDerWal netted 16 of the 45 points in the Mariner loss.
The visitors held a 50-30 rebounding edge over Purchase, but were out-blocked, 5-1.
The Panthers, now 2-2 overall, return to their home court next Monday as they host the College of St. Elizabeth in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.
