Purchase, NY (Jan. 3, 2014) – The Purchase College women's basketball team struggled to shake off the rust in its return to the hardwood Friday night.
Suiting up for the first time since Dec. 12, the Panthers played hosted to neighboring rival Manhattanville and fell behind quickly in the first half. Despite a solid effort after the poor start, the visiting Valiants yielded an 84-55 victory.
Manhattanville began on a 22-0 run and didn't look back.
The Valiants led 41-19 at the break, highlighted by 14 points from guard Candice Scott-Mason. Center Alyson Caiazzo chipped in 10 points and 10 rebounds, recording a double-double in the opening frame.
The Panthers were paced by Lineker St.Hilaire (JR/Wyandanch, NY), who scored 10 of the team's 19 points over the first 20 minutes. She also added five rebounds and two steals in the first half.
Purchase (4-4) performed better in the second half as Manhattanville outscored the hosts, 43-36.
Panther center Jazmin Garcia (JR/Peekskill, NY) turned it up in the second half and finished with a team-high 16. St.Hilaire and Jess Lindsay (SR/Rochester, NY) finished with 10 apiece offensively. Garcia and St.Hilaire also shared the rebound high with eight boards.
The Valiants (3-8) got 22 points, including three 3-pointers from Bri Pabon, who led the way. Four players finished in double figures offensively, including Pabon, Caiazzo (16), Scott-Mason (14) and Ashley Franklin (11). Caiazzo totaled 16 points and 15 rebounds in the standout double-double effort.
