First Loss in Conference Play for Purchase

Box Score

Bronx, NY (Oct. 14, 2014) – A single goal proved to be the difference for SUNY Maritime Tuesday night.

The Privateers narrowly defeated visiting Purchase 1-0 at Reinhart Field to improve to 6-6-1 (2-2-1 Skyline Conference). The loss dropped the Panthers to 6-6-1 (3-1-1 Skyline).

Maritime's Kieran Donnelly provided the game winner early. Brett Reilly lofted the ball in from the right wing and towards Sheick Wattara, who was positioned at the top of the six-yard box. It bounced off of his body to a wide open Donnelly, who charged forward and scored his fourth goal of the season. The score came inside of the first two minutes of play.

The Panthers had a chance shortly after that and actually found the back of the net on a shot from the top of the box, but it was called back as offsides was ruled against them.

Play the rest of the first half was pretty even, as the shots turned out to be in favor of Purchase, 9-8.

Maritime keeper Karl Weber was forced to make four saves in the opening half, while his counterpart from Purchase, Esteban Aguilar (JR/East Hampton, NY), turned aside three shots.

Purchase nearly scored early in the second half, but Weber deflected a good scoring opportunity to maintain the lead.

The Panthers turned on some momentum and had many of their shots in the half wind up on goal, but Weber made five more saves to finish with nine on the night.

The Panthers will look to bounce back Saturday at home when they host conference rival Mount Saint Mary on Senior Day. Game time is set for noon.
