Kristine Viven sank a jump shot in the closing seconds to help the Panther women's basketball team earn a 57-55 season-opening road win at United States Merchant Marine Academy Wednesday.
Purchase (1-0) trailed 34-24 at halftime before outscoring the Mariners (0-1) by 12 in the second half.
The Panthers used a 10-minute stretch in the second half to turn a 10-point deficit into a 46-45 lead after a 16-5 run. They extended the advantage to as many as five points at 3:38 with Purchase taking a 54-49 lead.
Rookie guard
Allison Haugh(SO/New City, NY) led the Panthers with a game-high 27 points. Teammate
Elizabeth Osowiecki (JR/Franklin Square, NY) also scored in double-figures, as she tallied 13 points on the night.
The Panther defense held USMMA to 30-percent shooting for the game despite the Mariners leading the boards, 60-35. Guard Jenna Wetherington had a game-high 13 rebounds for the USMMA.
Purchase returns to the road on Friday as they travel to Wesleyan University for a two-day tournament. The weekend kicks off with an 8 p.m. game against SUNY New Paltz.
