Brooklyn, NY (Feb. 17, 2014) – Men's basketball made another leap in the national rankings Monday and celebrated moving up to No. 16 by downing NYU-POLY, 78-55.
The victory clinches first place in the Skyline Conference standings for the men's team and home court for the league tournament. Purchase, now 22-1, earned a postseason bye in the conference quarterfinals and will host the league semifinals on Feb. 27.
The win Monday night at Jacobs Gymnasium also boosted the Panthers' conference record to a perfect 16-0. The loss drops NYU-POLY to 2-14 in conference and 4-19 overall.
The Jays got off to a slow start, only scoring 18 points in the first half.
Meanwhile, the Panthers went on a 17-0 run and led by as much as 30 in the second half, outscoring the hosts 46-18 by intermission.
Poly outscored Purchase in the second half, 37-32, but it wasn't enough.
Purchase had two players in double figures offensively with center Joel Neri (JR/Port Chester, NY) totaling 16 and point guard Ryan Lobban (SR/Bronx, NY) adding 10 points. In addition, the Panthers recorded 31 points from their bench making for a solid team win.
In the loss, Issac Neaves led Poly with near a double-double (10 points and nine rebounds).
The Panthers will now return to Purchase for Wednesday night's matchup with Sage. The evening also includes the program's Senior Night festivities.
