Panthers Fall to Colonials

Box Score

Purchase, NY (Feb. 6, 2014) – The Purchase College women's basketball suffered a mild setback on Thursday night, dropping its matchup with tough, non-conference opponent, Western Connecticut State University.

The Colonials yielded a 70-43 final.

The top guns for tonight were Jazmin Garcia (JR/Peekskill, NY) for Purchase and Sciarra Brandt, Chelsea Mone and Colleen Cosker for Western Connecticut.

Garcia finished with a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds. She also added two steals.

In the win, Mone finished with a team-high 14 points, seven boards, three assists and one steal. Brandt followed with 12 points, eight rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Cosker also had a good outing, posting 11 points and three boards. In addition, she had a game-high five assists and four steals.

The rebound and assist disparities were evident throughout the contest. The Colonials led both categories 35-23 and 21-5, respectively.

The Panther defense was scattered to start, giving up three straight interior buckets. Their play picked up soon after, tying the score at six in the first few minutes of the game. The tempo was up-and-down in the beginning, each team exchanging either points or turnovers.

Head coach Kellianne Dunlay was not happy with the way her team started, as she called for her players to feed Garcia in the post. The game started to slip away from Purchase when Western Connecticut went up 29-14 with five minutes to play in the opening frame.

The Colonials never looked back from that point on.

This loss drops Purchase to 10-9 overall. Meanwhile, WestConn improves to 12-8.

The Panthers' next game is on the road against another non-conference opponent, the College of New Rochelle. Tip-off is Sunday at 1 p.m.
