(Aug. 30, 2014) – A day after opening the season in the win column, Purchase men's soccer fell 4-0 to Utica College on the road at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
In the process, Utica opens the season at 2-0 for the third time in the last four years. The Pioneers have now outscored their opponents 7-0 over the course of their first two games, after topping Sage 3-0 in their home opener on Friday night.
Utica's Shane Ruffing continued his dominant play as he added two more goals and now leads all Pioneers with five on the season. Bita Gazashvilli netted his first collegiate goal to open the scoring.
Purchase locked the Pioneers down for the remainder of the first half and the score was set at 1-0 as the halftime horn sounded.
However, Ruffing opened the second-half scoring with two goals in a span of 31 seconds to push the UC lead to 3-0 in the 56th minute. Reserve Marcel Dupuis netted his first collegiate goal in the 74th minute to secure the 4-0 victory for the Pioneers.
On a more positive note for Purchase, the Panthers took a 5-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities and rookie keeper
Thomas Ogrodnik (FR/Washingtonville, NY) played well in defeat, logging all 90 minutes.
Now, the Panthers return to Purchase for the home opener Wednesday against Brooklyn College. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
