Box Score Farmingdale, NY
(Sept. 27, 2014) – Men's soccer kept its perfect conference record intact at Farmingdale State, saving the proverbial best for last against the Rams on their home turf.
Backed by two second-half goals, the Panthers downed FSC 2-0 on the road Saturday. The Skyline Conference win boosted their league record to 2-0-1. Purchase is now 5-3-1 overall. The loss dropped Farmingdale to 3-7 this fall, including 0-2 in conference play.
In a scoreless first half, Farmingdale State controlled the offense as they outshot the Panthers 11-4 and held a 4-0 corner kick advantage.
But that changed in the second half.
Only 1:48 after the halftime break, first-year Panther
Renato Martins (JR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored on a quick pass in front by forward
Andres Romero (SR/Port Chester, NY) to put Purchase ahead, 1-0.
In the 84th minute, the Panthers increased their lead to 2-0 after midfielder
Junior Sanguina (SR/White Plains, NY) netted a cross in front from
Myles Clohessy (JR/Cornwall, CT).
The Rams were unable to score over the final minutes as they dropped the conference matchup.
FSC goalkeeper Robert Tucker recorded three saves for the Rams, while Panther netminder
Esteban Aguilar (JR/East Hampton, NY) stopped seven shots for Purchase.
"Andres and Myles had very good games," Purchase
head coach James Bruno said afterward by phone. "Big shutout win for Esteban in goal and our backline, led by
Anthony Iurillo, Wil Kaufmann and
Enea Canaj, all put in solid games defensively and helped us seal this win."
The Panthers have a short turnaround after an off-day Sunday. Purchase will be back in action Monday at the College of Staten Island in a non-conference tilt.
