(Jan. 17, 2015) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury came out victorious in the battle of the Panthers Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Clarissa Gallagher and sophomore forward Crystal Barnes each registered a double-double to lead the visiting Panthers to a 75-42 win over host Purchase College.
Old Westbury advanced their record to 8-8 overall and 2-2 in the Skyline Conference with the win, while Purchase drops to 2-11 overall and 0-4 in the Skyline.
Purchase center
Elizabeth Osowiecki (JR/Franklin Square, NY) opened up the scoring with a jumper at 19:50, but Old Westbury answered back quickly with a Barnes free throw and three-point shot made by Raven Pentz to bring the score to 4-2 in Old Westbury favor.
The biggest lead of the night for Purchase was at 5:15 after a layup by
Kristine Viven (JR/New York, NY) put the Panthers up 13-9. From there, Purchase struggled to keep up with the depth of the visiting bench, and by the end of the first half, Old Westbury was ahead 25-18.
Despite a solid effort from Purchase to chip away at the deficit, the visiting Panthers continued to distance themselves, going on a 11-3 run in the opening minutes of the second half. The spurt was highlighted by a triple from Gallagher and two buckets from Barnes.
With less than three minutes left on the clock, Old Westbury stretched its lead to 31 points after a made layup by Bridgid McNeill. Teammate Imani Lariosa added another jumper to give the visitors a 33—point edge over Purchase to end the game.
Purchase was led by Viven, who tallied 11 points, six rebounds, five steals and two assists. Osowiecki also totaled 11 points and corralled a team-high 11 boards and three blocks. Senior forward
Jeidar Cole (Bronx, NY) added to the effort with 8 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
For the visitors, Barnes led with a game-high 18 points— shooting 8-14 from field goal range— and totaling 14 boards in only 22 minutes of action.
Purchase takes a break from conference action on Monday as the Panthers get set to host the College of New Rochelle for a 7 p.m. tip.
