Results Purchase, NY
(Dec. 4, 2015) – Panther swim returned to action Friday night at Purchase, as the program's four-meet homestand on the men's side continued with Brooklyn College on the pool deck. For the Panther women, it is their second home meet over three outings, which included a solo road win last time out at St. Joseph's College-LI.
Purchase, which split its home opener with Lehman in November, hosted the non-conference Bulldogs tonight and will then have William Paterson and Sarah Lawrence on campus next week – the final two swim meets before the holiday break and New Year. In between the holidays and second semester, the Panthers will travel to Puerto Rico for winter training before returning home in late January for one final home meet in preparation for Skyline Championships.
The Panthers defeated CUNY rival Brooklyn 109-71 on the women's side and fell 101-94 on the men's side. The men led early, fell behind late and then held the lead going into the final event, where Brooklyn won the 200 medley relay for the win.
In the process, Purchase is now 6-4 overall on the women's side and 1-6 on the men's. Brooklyn is now 3-2 on the men's side and 2-3 on the women's side.
Purchase opened with a victory in the women's 200-yard medley relay, jumping out to 11-4 advantage.
Kristina Moucha (SR/Montauk, NY),
Natalie Allen (SR/Staten Island, NY),
Melissa Trial (SR/Pound Ridge, NY) and
Haley Ryan (SR/East Hampton, NY) combined for the win on the women's side.
The Brooklyn men seized an 11-4 advantage of its own following the 200 MR.
In the 1,000 freestyle, rookie standout
Colleen Ferguson (FR/Marcellus, NY) extended the Panther lead, grabbing a first-place finish for nine points in the individual event. Behind Ferguson, the Panther women led 23-11 after the distance event.
On the men's side, captain
Carl Marsh (SR/Southampton, NY) duplicated the feat, garnering a first-place finish in the 1,000 for another nine Panther points. The men led 17-16 following the second event.
Trail captured a first in the 200 freestyle, while teammate
Lorena Peralta (SO/Bronx, NY) took second for 15 Purchase points and a commanding 39-14 margin.
Andrew Kaplan (SR/Cooperstown, NY) scored a first-place in the 200 free as well, while
Colin Russell (SO/Pennington, NJ) earned a first in the 50 free and
captain Sam Jaffe (JR/Silver Spring, MD) earned another first in the 200 IM. Following the 10th event, Purchase led 48-40.
Brooklyn won the 50 free behind a first from Rosalia Xue.
The Panthers women then bounced back with a first in the 200 IM, courtesy of
Katherine Lopez (FR/Dix Hills, NY) and her 2:42.61 first-place showing.
The Purchase women held a 64-26 lead going into the first break, right before the 100-yard butterfly.
Following the break, Trail posted her second first-place finish of the night, winning the 100 fly (1:02.62). On the men's side, Jaffe did the same. He swam a speedy 57.24 to best the field in the 100 fly. The men now led 59-48.
But Brooklyn posted 16 points in the 100 free to swing the lead back in its favor. Hugo Meza won the event. The visitors led 64-61 after 14 events.
Meanwhile, Allen won the 100 free (1:05.61) and Peralta won the 100 back (1:10.47) for a 109-38 lead. The Panthers turned it over to exhibition the rest of the way.
The Brooklyn men extended the late lead (76-67) in event 16, as Patrick Joseph Limage won the 100 back for nine points.
But the Panthers saved the best for last. Marsh won the 500 free (6:21.60) and Jaffe touched first in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.15), recapturing the lead late, 92-86.
It came down to the final 200 MR on the men's side. However, Brooklyn's first and second place finishes in the event totaled 15 points for the 101-94 decision.
The women wrapped up in exhibition, 109-71.
