Purchase, NY
(Oct. 5, 2016) – On Senior Night for Purchase College women's soccer (3-5-2) fans saw an exciting game against Brooklyn College (4-4-2) that went into double overtime as neither team was able to net a goal, ending in a 0-0 draw.
Surrounded by friends, loved ones and teammates, Panther seniors
Amanda Green and
Briana Leon were honored during the pregame ceremony, MCed by
Sports Information Director Bobby Ciafardini. Ciafardini first introduced Leon, a three-year soccer player and two-sport standout, who also plays women's softball. Leon (SR/Glen Cove, NY), who made the transition from goalkeeper to field player in her senior campaign, made a combined 141 saves in two seasons between the pipes.
This season, like fellow senior Green (SR/Roslyn, NY), "Bree" has keyed Purchase's 3-1-1 record in Skyline Conference play – this year helping on the field as a forward. She was joined during the ceremony by her mother and father, as well as the family's puppy, who looked on from the stands.
"Briana's team-first attitude and drive have inspired her teammates to work harder," said
Purchase head coach Amy Marron of Leon. "Briana has been an instrumental leader in the success of the team's development in regards to teamwork and results. Her success is also evident, as seen by her individual progress and growth. Her investment in the soccer program will be missed, but we know her passion and dedication will be carried on by the underclassman."
Green, a four-year standout in the midfield, was joined by her mother and father. Her brother, and the family's puppy were also in attendance – "possibly the first all puppy Senior Night in Panther history," Ciafardini joked.
Affectionately known as "Greenie," Green is currently seventh in goals and fourth in average goals per contest in the league. For her Panther career, she has amassed 34 goals, including five hat tricks. Green netted a hat trick earlier this season against Yeshiva and has anchored a revitalized unit in Marron's first season at the helm.
"Greenie's hard work, dedication and support are evident in everything she does," Marron said of Green. "Her commitment to the Purchase Soccer program has pushed everyone around her every day, both on and off the field. Her presence will be missed on the field, but we are sure Amanda's support for the team and program will always be present."
As for the contest, the matchup was a defensive battle for the full 110 minutes. The Panthers outshot Brooklyn 16-9, 7-5 on net. Purchase goalkeeper
Rachel Mizrahi (JR/Goldens Bridge, NY) had a standout night, shutting down five Brooklyn shots, including a penalty kick in the second half.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday against St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn). Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at St. John's University field.
