New Paltz, NY
(Nov. 10, 2017) – The Purchase College men's and women's swim teams swam at New Paltz Friday night, narrowly falling 90-75 on the women's side and 79-51 on the men's side.
It was a special night for New Paltz coach Tom Eickelberg and Purchase
assistant coach Betsy Eickelberg. Tom not only got the chance to coach against his younger sister, who stood in as the head coach for visiting Purchase, but also witnessed two of his swimmers break pool records in his team's home opener.
"My sister was actually the active head coach for Purchase today, so it was pretty cool to coach against her," he told the New Paltz sports information staff for an article on their website. "She is certainly a role model in a lot of ways in my life even though she's my younger sister and it is really cool watching them get instilled with her competitive spirit."
It was back-to-back record-breaking performances by the Hawks early in the meet. Up first was Cooper Knapp, the reigning SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, who went into the race eyeing a spot in SUNY New Paltz's record books in the 200-yard individual medley. Knapp clocked in at 1 minute, 52.96 seconds in the event to break not only an Elting Pool record but a school record as well.
Jaimie Kaefer was next to make history for New Paltz. The junior set a new pool record in the women's 200 IM, clocking in with a time of 2:09.59.
Daniel Demopoulos (SR/White Plains, NY) and
Katherine Lopez (JR/Dix Hills, NY) posted fourth-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle events for Purchase.
Alex Lally (SR/Mesquite, TX) finished fourth in the 200 IM, while
Robert Olejarz (SR/Brooklyn, NY) and
Madi Smith (SR/Lagrangeville, NY) captured fourths in the 50 freestyle events.
Eric Lee (FR/Bayside, NY) posted a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly. Purchase earned some stronger finishes down the stretch, including nice performances from Lopez,
Rachel DeSimone (SO/Red Hook, NY) and Lee.
Purchase is back in action Tuesday at home against William Paterson.
