(Sept. 17, 2017) – The Purchase College men's golf team fell 327-330 in a hard-fought road matchup with Yeshiva University Sunday.
The Maccabees outlasted the Panthers at the Pelham Bay Golf Course to improve to 3-1 on the fall. YU is also 3-1 in Skyline play. The loss drops Purchase to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in conference.
Dan Schub scored a 78 on the Par 71 course for YU. Teammate Jordan Soclof registered an 82, while Solomon Shulman scored an 83.
Purchase was paced by
Joseph Hart (JR/Riverhead, NY),
Camden Fix (SR/Fulton, NY) and
Will Burger (FR/Albany, NY).
After the first two groups finished , Panthers held a seven-point advantage, but stellar play by their opponents in the final group, helped YU edge out the victory.
Hart tied for first place with a sparkling 78 while Fix came in third with an 80.
"We hit the ball very well, but left a couple of shots out there," said Hart. "Camden and I could have gone a lot lower ... Camden hit a 345-yard drive on the closing hole ... one of the best shots I've seen him hit!"
Purchase head coach James Alfredo said the course was in great shape, but added, "the slow play from the patrons in front really tried all of the guys' patience. The round took five and a half hours, so well done to all of the guys for hanging in there."
Playing in the second group, Burger consistently hit one big drive after another. Following a sluggish front nine, Burger parred five holes in a row before bogeying the short, dangerous 17th.

"The hole sets up at 338 yards and coach and I contemplated hitting iron off of the tee, but I hit driver and put it pin high but 30 yards to the right. I hit a lob wedge and it bounced over just like the other guys, who made double bogey. I hit a nice chip but missed my par putt."
In the final group, Harry Backer (SR/Yonkers, NY) played steadily all day and Dylan Curran (FR/Yonkers, NY) had two birdies for the Panthers.
"The guys played well. It's a great group and we all can't wait to get out there again and play this upcoming week," Alfredo said.
Up next for Purchase, the Panthers will take on the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday at the Split Rock Golf Course in the Bronx.
