Greenwich, CT (Sept. 27, 2017) – Purchase golf welcomed visiting Mitchell College to the Tamarack Country Club Wednesday.
And it proved to be a good battle for both teams – a testament to the challenging course.
The 6,391 yard, par 71 layout was a strong test for both teams.
But the Panthers prevailed: 324 to 352.
After first tee introductions by Sports Information Director Bobby Ciafardini, the teams got to work by guiding their balls around the front nine.
Joseph Hart (JR/Riverhead, NY) was first off for the Panthers and quickly birdied the Par 4, first hole.
"It was a great start and it really created a nice flow of momentum for me," said Hart on his way to a front nine 39, and a 79 overall (T2).
"I'm really proud of our team for persevering through a tough test of golf, and the heat," explained Purchase head coach James Alfredo, noting the near 90 degree temperatures on the afternoon tee time that started at 1:09 p.m. "We went through our water supply pretty quickly."
Playing in the third spot, rookie Will Burger (FR/Albany, NY), carded a 77 and was low medalist for the event. Burger had three birdies on his round, but double-bogeyed the last hole to go to 6. "I really felt good out there and hit some big drives, including a 300-yarder on hole 17," Burger said. "I love the course and hit it very well."
Dylan Curran (FR/Yonkers, NY), Purchase's other dynamic rookie, finished tied for second, firing a 79 in the fifth spot. "Coach and I have been working a lot on my swing tempo and it's paying off," Curran said. "I actually hit it in the greenside bunker in two on the par- 5, 17th while the group in front of me was on the green, which they razed me a little bit. But I was hitting it so well I didn't realize I could reach them, but I did."
The Panthers next travel to the Farmingdale Invitational on Friday, Oct. 6 at the Bethpage Red Golf Course.
