(Oct. 10, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team scored three second-half goals to defeat visiting Purchase College, 3-0, on Wednesday night at Brooks Stadium.
With the victory, the Mariners improve to 8-3-2 (4-2-1 Skyline), while the Panthers fall to 4-4-2 (2-2-1).
The game was scoreless after the first half where USMMA outshot PC, 12-0. The Mariners had six shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, including one that was saved by a Panther defender at the goal line, however they were unable to find the back of the net.
The first tally of the night came in the 71st minute, when Alex Madonna received a feed pass from classmate Matt McCurnin.
Just 44 seconds after that goal, USMMA benefited from a foul in the box by the Panthers and were awarded a penalty kick. Joe Springer was called upon to take the PK and put the Mariners ahead, 2-0.
The third goal of the night came from Abram Ehrhorn, who converted a diving header off the crossbar and in off of a great cross from the near side from Liam Cashmore.
