Amber Jones poured in a game-high 31 points to pave the road to victory for Purchase College Saturday afternoon. The Panthers defeated Skyline Conference rival St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn), 77-68.
The victory marked the fourth straight win as the Panthers move to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in the league. In defeat, SJC drops to 8-5 and 5-2 in the Skyline.
In the opening minute, Purchase put up a quick four points on a free throw from
Dejeana Peoples (SO/New York, NY) and a three-pointer made by
Alfa DeJesus (JR/Bronx, NY). St. Joe's fired back with six unanswered points to take a 6-4 lead, but PC rallied with a 13-6 run to close the first quarter with a 17-12 advantage.
With 4:16 remaining in the stanza, Jones connected on a jumper to give Purchase a lead it would carry through the final buzzer.
Jones (Bronx, NY) connected on 10-of-23 shots from the field and 8-of-10 from the foul line to lead all scorers with 31 points. She also collected five rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Rookie forward
Shadai Plowden (FR/Yonkers, NY) aided the winning effort with 15 points and seven boards, while DeJesus netted another nine points and tied Peoples with eight rebounds.
Nyasia Harris (SR/South Fallsburg, NY) fueled the Panther defense with a game-high 15 rebounds (8 OF).
SJC saw three of its players reach double-digit scoring. Kelly O'Donnell notched a double-double afternoon with a team-best 28 points and 14 boards. Lauren Quesada joined her with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Victoria Porcasi contributed with 13 points.
Purchase is back in action on Thursday (Jan. 10) as the Panthers get set to play host to Skyline foe Farmingdale State.
