The Panthers finished with a score of 381 on the day, which was the same total as The College of Old Westbury. Both programs finished behind the host Golden Eagles, who won the event with a final mark of 347.
After the contest, head coach
James Alfredo spoke about the tough playing environment saying, "The conditions were brutal with wind gusts up to 40 mph, almost unplayable, which is evident by our players' front nine scores versus our back nine scores." Alfredo continued saying, "The front nine at Bellport Country Club is more in-land with the back nine exposed in a loop along the bay. Simon (Montalvo) shot a 38 on the front with a 49 on the back."
While it wasn't the best 18 holesÂ
Simon Montalvo (SO/New York, NY) played on the season, but he still led the Panthers with an 87. His score was good enough for second among the 13 golfers at the event. Afterwards, Montalvo acknowledged just how much the weather affected played on the day. "My ball came to rest on the 15th green and when I went to mark it the wind started to blow the ball in a different direction."
Purchase's other leaders in the match wereÂ
Dylan Curran (JR/Yonkers, NY), who finished ninth with a 94 and captain
Will Burger (JR/Albany, NY), who finished 10th with a 99, though he wasn't happy with the outcome at all. "It was a very hard day of golf," said Burger. "They should have called the match after nine holes."
Up next for the Panthers is the final event of the season, as the team hosts the Purchase College Golf Invitational on October 21st at noon. The event will be played at Tamarack Country Club, which is located in Greenwich, CT.Â
