Purchase, NY
(Feb. 4, 2019) – History is homemade—at least it was tonight as Purchase College senior guard
Amber Jones etched her name in the record books as the sixth female 1,000-point scorer in program history.
The milestone wasn't the only highlight of the game though, as the Panther women's basketball team used a late run in overtime to knock off non-conference SUNY-Delhi by a score of 71-68.
The win snaps a four-game losing streak for Purchase as the Panthers move to 10-11 overall. In defeat, the visiting Broncos drop to 11-10 on the season.
Jones (Bronx, NY) entered tonight's game nine points shy of 1,000. With just over five minutes remaining in the second quarter, Jones sank a deep 3-pointer to reach the momentous mark. Teammate
Dejeana Peoples (SO/New York, NY) was awarded the assist.
Following the play, head coach
Varrell Eddie called a timeout and joined Jones and the team as midcourt for a photo op. Jones was also given "1000" balloons and a basketball to commemorate the accomplishment.
Jones reached 1,000 after only 2 ½ seasons. She joins Panther greats Jen Danio '08, Jessie Domes '10, Alyssa Guido '12, Jess Lindsay '14 and Elizabeth Osowiecki '16 in the 1,000 club since the program rejoined the NCAA in 2007. She is also the fifth to eclipse the mark while scoring all 1,000 points in Purchase Blue, Orange and White.
At the end of the opening half, Delhi had a 34-29 lead over PC.
The Broncos put up another impressive 20 points in the third quarter, led by Samiaya Salley's seven point effort.
The Panthers, however, were saving the best for last. Purchase shot 42.1 percent (8-of-19), including a trio of 3's in the fourth quarter to erase a 14-point deficit and tie the game.
Returning from a near season-ending injury, junior forward
Arta Krasniqi (Bronx, NY) made her first game back one to remember. With less than a minute left in regulation, Krasniqi connected from beyond the arc to tie the game at 64-all.
Purchase came close to winning in the final second but a missed layup left the score tied and sent the game into overtime.
Back-and-forth scoring was the theme in extra time. Senior center
Nyasia Harris (South Fallsburg, NY) netted the first shot for Purchase but Delhi's Diana Echols answered with a layup (66-66) on the next possession. Senior guard
Amber Yarter (Albany, NY) drove in a layup to put the home team back in front (68-66) but a Salley layup tied the game yet again (68-68). In the final three minutes, Jones netted a 3-pointer and the Panther defense held off any Bronco reprisal en route to securing the 71-68 victory.
Jones finished the night with an impressive 26 points, five assists and three steals. Harris recorded a career-best 22 rebounds to go along with 15 points for her fourth double-double of the season. Freshman guard
Shadai Plowden (Yonkers, NY) aided the winning effort with 11 points and seven boards.
For Delhi, Holland led with a team-best 26 points and 10 rebounds. Salley netted 19 points and a game-high seven assists, while Echols finished with 13 points and a team-best 14 boards.
Purchase is back at home again this Wednesday to take on non-conference opponent Albany College of Pharmacy at 7 p.m.
