West Harrison, NY
(Feb. 25, 2012) – Three outs shy of a season-opening victory, Purchase baseball fell victim to the College at Brockport, an elite DIII program.
The Golden Eagles (2-0), who won the 2010 SUNYAC crown, escaped with a 7-5 victory in game one and sealed the doubleheader sweep in a 7-0 win in game two at Silver Lake Park. The Panthers led 4-3 in the opener, but closer
Kevin McQuade (SR/Mamaroneck, NY) allowed four runs in the seventh.
Purchase (0-2) would show its mettle, pushing across one more in the bottom of the seventh of game one, but the momentum achieved in the top half of the frame carried Brockport to a season-opening win. The Golden Eagles were even better in the second game as starter James Bardenett tossed a one-hitter over six to earn the victory. Mark Driesel kept the one-hitter intact with a scoreless and hitless frame in the seventh.
The Panther offense exploded in the first game of the 2012 campaign, opening with a four-spot in the first inning to take an early and commanding lead. Purchase's
Michael Sarni (JR/Shelton, CT) walked and moved to second on a well-placed single through the right side by designated hitter
John Duffy (SO/Staten Island, NY). Shortly later, cleanup hitter
Mark Donahue (SR/Brookhaven, NY) would walk the bases loaded, setting the stage for co-captain
Josh Spielberg (SR/Oceanside, NY). With two outs, Spielberg chopped an infield single up the middle, plating the game's first run.
A hit batsman and an error later, and the Panthers, who a put a tremendous amount of pressure on the Golden Eagles defense, led 4-0.
Enter ace
Matt Paz* (JR/Bridgeport, CT). The pitcher picked up where he left off a season ago. The right-hander pitched well in a no-decision. He allowed three runs over five innings. However, it was his seven walks and some loss of command that led to a three-run fifth.
Nonetheless, Paz bounced back and finished off the inning to keep Purchase in front, 4-3.
The Panthers looked well on their way to a win in the opener before the blown save, which was highlighted by a leadoff triple by Mike Weakley. The clutch Weakley, who also doubled and drove in two runs in the opener, would score the tying run in the seventh, paving the way for a Brockport victory.
Feeding off that momentum, the Golden Eagles scored four runs to start the second game and tacked on a run in the third and two more insurance runs in the top half of the seventh. Brockport had three hitters collect two hits apiece in the second game, including Nick Bunce, Kyle Tracy and Pete Wilson. The trio accounted for six of the team's 12 hits in the finale.
Purchase starter
Chris Carboni (SR/Stratford, CT) took the loss in game two.
