West Harrison, NY
(Mar. 10, 2012) – SUNY New Paltz avenged a doubleheader sweep from last spring at Silver Lake Park by taking both ends of a twin bill Saturday from the Panthers in their 2012 series.
Purchase (4-6), which defeated the Hawks (3-2) twice in West Harrison in 2011, fell 7-4 in the opener and 13-8 in game two, despite playing well on another cold afternoon at Silver Lake.
The opener was a tight, see-saw affair from the start.
Chris Carboni (SR/Stratford, CT) allowed a leadoff single to Matt Carr, who then stole second base, but the hard-throwing right-hander settled down and struck out the next two batters before retiring New Paltz' cleanup hitter, Jake Cameron, on a long fly to center.
After the Panthers batted in the bottom of the first, Carboni returned to hill in the second inning and walked Thomas Pinnola to lead off the frame. The two battled in a long at-bat, with Pinnola grinding out a walk. The next two hitters followed with singles, loading the bases. Carboni once again settled in, retiring Chris Paulicelli on a pop up to second base.
With one out and the bases still loaded, Carboni reared back and found a little extra, inducing Mike Sherlock into a 6-4-3 double play, ending the inning and keeping the score locked at 0-0.
New Paltz hurler Andrew Grann (1-0) started strong as well, holding the Panthers hitless in the first and second innings. He allowed only one base runner – a hit batsman in the first.
A leadoff walk in the third inning opened the door for New Paltz to break the scoreless tie. Paul Merola hit a slow grounder to shortstop that Purchase's
Josh Spielberg (SR/Oceanside, NY) gobbled up, but a throwing error to first put runners on the corners. Merola then stole second base. Three-hole hitter Matt Prescia struck out swinging, but Jake Cameron singled through the left side of the infield, driving home two. The second runner scored on a wild throw home.
Carboni (1-1) was able to limit the damage in the third inning, finishing off the frame with a fly out and another strike out. Two errors highlighted an inning that gave the Hawks a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the third, Purchase put together a small two-out rally, with an infield single by
Michael Sarni (JR/Shelton, CT) and a walk by
Michael Marrone (SR/Pleasantville, NY). However, Grann navigated out of trouble by retiring Leo Francisco (SO/Bedford Hills, NY) on a ground out to second base.
Carboni tossed his first one-two-three inning in fourth, but the Panthers, who got their first hit off Grann in the third, couldn't push any across in the bottom half of the inning, with New Paltz' starter matching Carboni's perfect inning in the fourth.
New Paltz went one-two-three in the top of the fifth as Carboni pitched his second consecutive perfect, scoreless inning.
The bottom of the fifth inning started with
Colin Morris (JR/Bridgeport, CT) getting hit by a pitch and
Phil Georges (JR/Brooklyn, NY) reaching first on a walk. With two runners on, no one out and the Panthers threatening,
Kevin McQuade (SR/Mamaroneck, NY) dropped a perfect bunt down the third baseline for a single, loading the bases.
Sarni followed with a single, plating Morris for the Panthers' first run. Trailing now, 2-1, Purchase scratched across the tying run on a fielder's choice by Francisco.
New Paltz answered in the sixth inning with a leadoff double by Cameron. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third. Carboni then walked catcher Matt Kaldon, who proceeded to steal second base.
On the steal by Kaldon, Cameron danced off third and attempted to come home on the throw through to second base. Sarni fired home, but over threw Bernstein, allowing Cameron to score the go-ahead run. Designated hitter Jimmy Briggs brought home the second run of the inning on an RBI single, handing the Hawks a 4-2 lead.
Now pitching with the lead, Grann continued his strong outing. Purchase managed only an infield single by Morris in the sixth.
Panther reliever
Christopher Nast (SO/Pound Ridge, NY) got the first two outs of the seventh, but left a runner on second base for
Vincent McCarty (FR/Huntington, NY), who surrendered a triple and a double that brought home three insurance runs.
Grann and the Hawks closed out game one with a 7-2 win.
New Paltz picked up where it left off in the opener, starting game two with an infield single by Carr. He advanced to second base on an error by Panther starter
Eric Cuadrado (SR/Yonkers, NY) on a pickoff attempt. Cuadrado walked the next batter and then allowed a single to load the bases in the top of the first.
With the bases jammed, Cameron's sacrifice fly to center plated the game's first run. Shortly after, a throwing error allowed another run to come across. Cuadrado would then reload the bases on a walk to David Lostaglio.
Donahue came to the rescue with one out, running down a blast by Lostaglio in center. The sprinting grab plated another run on the sacrifice fly, but prevented more from scoring. Donahue capped the frame by catching the final out of the first.
New Paltz brought a three-lead into the bottom of the first in game two, providing an immediate cushion for starter Michael Pinnola (1-0).
Following the quick start for New Paltz, Pinnola and Cuadrado pitched scoreless innings leading into the third, where Cuadrado allowed two more runs, highlighted by a sac fly by Thomas Pinnola and a single and RBI by Lostaglio. A leadoff walk and a double by Cameron set the table the two-run inning.
After allowing another run in the fourth, Cuadrado (0-2) was removed for reliever Nast. The Hawks finished off the top half of the fourth leading 7-0.
In the bottom of the inning, Spielberg blasted a long home run – his first of the season – to left for Purchase's first run of game two. The dinger paved the way for a two-out rally. Two walks and an RBI single later from the red-hot Sarni cut the deficit to 7-2.
New Paltz combated the two runs with two of its own in the fifth. A two-RBI single by Paulicelli pushed the Hawk lead to 9-2. Purchase reliever
Gary Riefenhauser (JR/Dobbs Ferry, NY) induced a double play and pitched around a two-out single to keep the Panthers in the game.
However, the Hawks broke it open in the sixth, adding three more runs for a 12-2 margin. New Paltz tacked on a single run in the seventh for a 13-2 lead.
Refusing to go quietly, the Panthers showed their toughness and rallied for six runs in the last half of the inning. With the reserves driving the action, Purchase loaded the bases. A leadoff single by Francisco followed by another single by
Elan Trischitta (FR/Saugerties, NY) – the first of his Panther career – and an RBI single by
Frank Fiumara* (SR/Port Chester, NY) got the rally going.
Some sloppy play on the part of New Paltz and some strong, selective hitting on the part of the Panthers kept things moving. Shortly later,
Robert Robles (FR/Bronx, NY) walked, plating another run before pinch hitter
Will Bernstein* (SR/Staten Island, NY) doubled in three. Another hit by Franciscoand a walk later and the Panthers were threatening to close the gap on the 13-8 score before the rally ended on a fly out to right field.
Purchase will now travel to Pomona, NY tomorrow for a twin bill against CUNY rival John Jay College at the minor league baseball home of the Rockland Boulders.
