Pomona, NY
(Mar. 11, 2012) – Coming right back a day after two disappointing losses to SUNY New Paltz on Saturday, the Purchase College baseball team came away from the weekend smiling after taking a Sunday twin bill from the John Jay College Bloodhounds by the scores of 9-4 and 5-1.
With the two wins, the Panthers now stand at 6-6 on the young season. Sunday's doubleheader was played at Provident Bank Park, the minor league baseball home of the Rockland Boulders.
In game one Sunday, the Panthers got two-hit performances from four players – second baseman
Michael Sarni (JR/Shelton, CT); center fielder
Mark Donahue (SR/Brookhaven, NY); shortstop
Josh Spielberg (SR/Oceanside, NY) and first baseman
Phil Georges (JR/Brooklyn, NY). Sarni and third baseman
Kevin McQuade (SR/Mamaroneck, NY) each drove him two runs apiece.
On the mound, Panthers' starting pitcher
Matt Paz* (JR/Bridgeport, CT) went the distance in game one and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out two en route to his first win of the season.
The host Panthers, who served as the visiting team in both Sunday games, left the bases loaded in the top of the first in game one, with John Jay striking quickly with a run in the bottom half to take a 1-0 lead.
But the Panthers scored two in the second and three in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning. Two of the three runs in the fourth were unearned as John Jay miscues by its infield led to Purchase scoring extra runs.
John Jay battled back in the bottom of the sixth and pulled within a run, but in the top of the seventh, Purchase returned the favor with interest and plated four runs to go up 9-4. John Jay failed to get a run across in the bottom half as the game ended.
In the second game, Purchase scored five runs in the first two innings to take a 5-1 lead, which turned out to be the final score.
For Purchase, Georges went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Sarni had another two-hit game from his leadoff spot.
On the mound,
Miller Lulow* (JR/New York, NY) went the distance and gave up the one earned run on seven hits. He struck out five and walked none in a strong performance. With the win, he evened his pitching record at 1-1.
Purchase returns to action Thursday with a single-game 3:30 p.m. matchup against local rival Manhattanville College at neighboring Manhattanville.
