West Harrison, NY (Mar. 18, 2012) – A pair of well-pitched games was exactly what Panther baseball ordered Sunday at Silver Lake Park.

A day after dropping two to No. 22 SUNY Cortland, the Panthers served up two quality, quick paced victories over St. Joseph's College-BKLYN, winning 3-1 in game one and capping the afternoon in a 7-3 victory.

In the opener, Panther starter Chris Carboni (SR/Stratford, CT) dominated SJC-BKLYN from the outset, scattering five hits over a complete game, seven-inning effort. The talented right-handed pitcher showed poise and veteran savvy, striking out four and walking none in another standout effort. Carboni, who allowed one earned run, is now 2-2 on the season. He retired the last 11 straight, coasting to victory.

With Carboni setting the tone on the hill, the Panther offense fell right into place, bouncing back from yesterday's twin bill defeat to DIII elite SUNY Cortland. Purchase jumped on the board in the first inning thanks to an RBI double off the bat of center fielder Mark Donahue (SR/Brookhaven, NY). The clutch, two-out extra base hit plated Colin Morris (JR/Bridgeport, CT) for a quick 1-0 lead.

Although Carboni would surrender the run right back in the top half of the second, the Panthers battled the Bears – another tough non-conference opponent – matching zeroes in the third before breaking through for the game's second run in the fourth. Three singles highlighted by a go-ahead RBI single by Jay Ruiz (FR/Bronx, NY) handed the Panthers a 2-1 lead.

That's when Carboni went into cruise control. The Panthers would add a single insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from Kevin McQuade (SR/Mamaroneck, NY). The three, four, five hitters keyed the offense Sunday. Phil Georges (JR/Brooklyn, NY) singled to leadoff the sixth. Donahue followed with a singe of his own, moving Georges to second and McQuade doubled in the game's third run.

Carboni polished off the quality win as the Panthers swiftly took care of business in the opener, which took only an hour and a half to play.

Miller Lulow* (JR/New York, NY) got the start for Purchase in game two. The Bears started strong, scoring a run in the top half of the first. They wrapped an error around two singles and scored the game's first run on an RBI by Joe Mendez.

Purchase answered right back in its first turn at the plate, manufacturing two runs on one hit and one error in the inning. The lineup put pressure on SJC-BKLYN starter Elvis Diaz immediately. Following a hit batsman and an error in the infield, a double steal by Sarni and Robert Robles (FR/Bronx, NY) tied the game at 1-1. Catcher Frank Fiumara* (SR/Port Chester, NY) singled home the go-ahead run for a 2-1 advantage.

The Bears countered with a run in the second on an RBI double by catcher Danny Zaretsky as the see-saw affair continued in the middle innings.

Although St. Joe's tied the score in the second, the Panthers bounced right back in the third inning, scoring another go-ahead run – this time on an RBI double by Sarni that plated Morris. Purchase added another run in the fourth on an RBI single by McQuade.

With Lulow cruising, the score remained 4-2 until the fifth, when the lineup broke out and scored three more runs. Leo Francisco (SO/Bedford Hills, NY) brought home the first run on an RBI single and shortly later shortstop John Duffy (SO/Staten Island, NY) smashed a two bagger in the left field gap, scoring another two runs for a commanding 7-2 lead.

Kevin Diaz homered for the Bears in the sixth, but the solo shot was too little too late for the visitors as Lulow regained his composure and finished off a strong start on the hill. In the process, Lulow earned his team-leading fourth win of the season. Game two was completed in just under two hours.

NOTES: Duffy, who has filled in admirably in place of injured co-captain Josh Spielberg (SR/Oceanside, NY), made a terrific defensive play in the hole to secure the first out of the top of the seventh inning in game one. Duffy stung the ball offensively at the plate, too, driving two balls to the wall – one that was caught – and the other, a two-RBI double in game two… Donahue collected three hits in game one (3 for 3, one run and one RBI)…SJC-BKLYN's Vinny Rossi had two hits in game one…Rob Mongiori had the lone RBI for the Bears in the opener…Donahue and McQuade had two hits apiece in game two for the Panthers.
