Purchase, NY (Apr. 21, 2012) – It came down to one doubleheader at home on the final day of the regular season. Win two and the Panthers were postseason bound.

But visiting Mount Saint Mary played spoiler, capturing a 5-2 game-one win and capping the afternoon in a 12-5 victory in which the Panthers played a majority of their roster. Purchase gave itself a chance to advance to the playoffs, despite some struggles the past two weeks, by winning Friday afternoon. However, Saturday never materialized as starter Matt Paz* (JR/Bridgeport, CT) struggled early, allowing three earned runs in 4 1/3 innings against a powerful lineup.

The Knights scored two more insurance runs in the fifth. Purchase battled back with two in the seventh, but the early damage was too difficult to overcome. MSMC starter Dan McCrea went 6 2/3 for the win. He allowed two earned runs on 10 hits.

Colin Morris (JR/Bridgeport, CT) and Will Bernstein* (SR/Staten Island, NY) had RBI for the Panthers in the opener. Jay Ruiz (FR/Bronx, NY) and Morris led the way with two hits apiece.

Meanwhile, MSMC was paced by Mike Matuk and his two RBI. Vinnie Carminati, Paul Cherubino and Brian McNoble added two hits each and one RBI apiece for the Knights.

In game two, MSMC and the Panthers were locked in a 2-2 tied after two, but the visitors scored eight runs, highlighted by two three-run homers in the third that deflated the home team. Mike Morelli did most of the damage, going 4 for 4 with three RBI, two runs and the first of the two three-run shots. Anthony D'Agostino had the other three-run homer.

For the Panthers, Michael Marrone (SR/Pleasantville, NY) and Michael Sarni (JR/Shelton, CT) led the way with two RBI apiece in game two.

The defeats ended Purchase's baseball season.

On a brighter note, the team recognized seniors Chris Carboni (SR/Stratford, CT), Mark Donahue (SR/Brookhaven, NY), Bernstein and Marrone on Senior Day. Purchase Sports Information Director Bobby Ciafardini announced the “Core Four” seniors in a brief ceremony in between games. Surrounded by family and friends, the four received certificates from the SID office. The four will also be honored during the program's annual awards banquet on Thursday, May 3.
