Panther Baseball Hangs Tough at Eastern Connecticut

Box Score - Game 1
Box Score - Game 2

Yaphank, NY (Mar. 11, 2013) – Purchase baseball took part in a doubleheader at Baseball Heaven Monday.

Although Eastern would earn two (9-3, 8-5) wins, Purchase played well in a nice non-conference tune-up.

In game one, Justin Sherman (SR/New Rochelle, NY) hit his first home run of the year and Purchase's first of the season. He went 2 for 4 with longball and two RBI. Panther leadoff man Michael Sarni (SR/Shelton, CT) also went 2 of 4 with a stolen base.

Later in the game, Tino DiPaterio (FR/Cortlandt Manor, NY) made his first appearance as a reliever, getting No. 3 hitter Joe Balowski to ground out to 3B.

Purchase starter Matt Paz* (SR/Bridgeport, CT) went six innings for the loss.

In game two, Sherman stayed hot, once again going 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and three RBI. Michael Skoller (JR/East Meadow, NY) was 1 for 4 with two RBI, and Daniel Stroud (SR/Nyack, NY) also had a double in defeat.

Defensively, Colin Morris (SR/Bridgeport, CT) made two outstanding catches in the sixth inning to save a couple of runs. Blake Jones (SO/Ballston Spa, NY) made his pitching debut by striking out Balowski in the fourth inning.

Also among the highlights, Miller Lulow* (SR/New York, NY) pitched 2.3 innings of no-hit ball while striking out three, and Phil Georges (SR/Brooklyn, NY) got out of a bases loaded and no-out jam by striking out three batters in the late innings of game two. Kevin McQuade (SR/Mamaroneck, NY) pitched the eighth and struck out one, while not surrendering a hit.

NOTES: Two Eastern CT and two Purchase pitchers were hit with line drive comebackers in both games … two nine inning games were played on a cold night at Baseball Heaven.
