West Harrison, NY (Mar. 2, 2013) – The Purchase College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Worcester State University at Silver Lake Park Saturday, winning 4-3 in the first game before losing game two, 3-1.

Standout second baseman and offensive sparkplug Michael Sarni (SR/Shelton, CT) opened game one with a single before stealing second and third to put himself in scoring position. A single by Daniel Stroud (SR/Nyack, NY) would bring Sarni home to give Purchase a swift 1-0 lead.

Right-handed ace Matt Paz* (SR/Bridgeport, CT) allowed two hits over six innings. He struck out one and walked none. With the win, he evened his pitching record at 1-1.

Pitcher Miller Lulow* (SR/New York, NY) would relieve Paz in the top of the seventh. Lulow pitched the next two innings, allowing two hits and one run.

Purchase (1-2) would score again in the bottom of the sixth when pinch-hitter Aryn Giddens (JR/Queens, NY) stole second and advanced home on a triple by Kevin McQuade (SR/Mamaroneck, NY). McQuade then scored on a Colin Morris (SR/Bridgeport, CT) sacrifice fly.  Morris had another RBI in the eighth inning which brought the Panthers to a 4-0 lead.

Worcester answered back in top of the ninth. Singles by Jake Sanderski, Nick Gezotis and Kurt Sabacinski left the bases loaded with only one out.  A hit by pitch and a ground-out RBI advanced two runners home, bringing the score to 4-3.  However, a ground-out to second base would end the game and seal Purchase's first win of the season.

In game two, Worcester scored one run in the first inning and two more in the seventh to win the game, 3-1.

For Purchase, Sarni had a ground-out RBI from his leadoff spot in the order, which would result in Purchase's only run of the game.

On the mound, lefty Mitchell Paz (SO/Bridgeport, CT), the brother of Matt, went four innings, giving up one earned run on four hits.

Purchase returns to action Friday as it hosts the Blue Devils of SUNY Fredonia in a single-game at 3:30 p.m.
