(Mar. 27, 2013) – With two outs and a runner on first in a 5-5 game in the bottom of the eighth inning, the College at Florham Devils drew three straight walks to take a 6-5 lead on their way to a win over Purchase in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Devils improved to 8-7 while the Panthers dropped to 9-7.
Purchase got on the board first with a run in the top of the first before plating two more in the top of the second. In the first inning,
Daniel Stroud (SR/Nyack, NY) began the day with an RBI single to score
Michael Skoller (JR/East Meadow, NY), who singled and stole second earlier.
Purchase was able to score a couple of more runs in the second after a leadoff double by
Kevin McQuade (SR/Mamaroneck, NY) and some FDU fielding miscues to take a 3-0 lead.
FDU scored two of its own in the bottom half of the second on a RBI double. The Devils took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third thanks to a RBI single and a Purchase error that scored two runs.
The Panthers came right back though, tying the game at 5-5 in the top of the fourth and the game stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth inning. Purchase tied it in the fifth after a single by Skoller and an error by the center fielder plated two runs.
Michael Moore (SR/Bronx, NY) came on a pitched three scoreless innings in relief to hold the game to 5-5 until the eighth.
John Duffy (JR/Staten Island, NY) added a single for Purchase, and
John Jonas (JR/Goshen, NY) went 2 for 3 with a double.
FDU's Nick Core singled with one out in the inning and was still on first with two outs. Second baseman John Bowe then walked followed by a walk to third baseman Austin Tomaszewicz to load the bases.
Peter Amerosi then came up and drew the third straight walk to push the winning run across for the Devils.
Core and first baseman Frank LaGuarina each went 2 for 5 with a run scored.
For the Panthers,
Blake Jones (SO/Ballston Spa, NY) took the loss in relief.
Gary Riefenhauser (SR/Dobbs Ferry, NY) made his first start of the year for Purchase.
Purchase will cap the Spring Break trip Thursday against Franklin and Marshall.
