Fishkill, NY
(Apr. 6, 2013) – Purchase baseball scored 32 runs over two games Saturday, cruisng to 15-0 and 17-0 victories, respectively, against Bard College at Dutchess Stadium – a minor league home of the Tampa Bay Rays.
Purchase (11-9) was too strong for a Raptors program that is fresh on the scene after decades of not having a team. The Panthers scored 15 runs on 13 hits in game one, highlighted by five multi-hit games (
Michael Sarni (SR/Shelton, CT),
Dan Stroud (SR/Nyack, NY),
Ronald Echavarria (SR/Bronx, NY),
Leo Francisco (JR/Bedford Hills, NY) and
John Duffy (JR/Staten Island, NY)).
Duffy smashed two doubles in the overwhelming win, and Francisco also doubled for the visitors, who were playing their second and third straight games in a minor league ballpark in one week – days after taking part in a single, nine-inning game against Manhattanville in Bridgeport, CT. Sarni and Stroud recorded two stolen bases apiece and rookie
Adam Brant (FR/Hyde Park, NY) sailed to victory on the mound.
Sarni, Echavarria and
Elan Trischittta (SO/Saugerties, NY) recorded two RBI apiece in game one.
Game two brought more of the same for Purchase. The Panther lineup dazzled, scoring 17 runs in seven inngs. Purchase totaled 16 hits in game two.
Stroud went 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs. He was the game two star offensively, blasting two doubles in the nightcap.
Josh Spielberg (SR/Oceanside, NY) also doubled twice, adding two hits to his credit.
Frank Fiumara* (SR/Port Chester, NY) and
Robert Robles (SO/Bronx, NY) also collected two hits apiece.
With the offense clicking, Purchase starter
Mitchell Paz (SO/Bridgeport, CT) coasted, striking out 16 over seven innings. The left-hander is now 4-3 on the season.
Purchase goes right back to work today against SJC-LI in a conference doubleheader.
