(Mar. 15, 2014) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy won both ends of a non-conference doubleheader against host Purchase Saturday.
The Eagles won 5-3 in both games, improving to 7-2 overall.
The Panthers came out strong in the first inning of the opening game, totaling two hits and two runs. They scored again in the bottom of the third off a
Michael Sarni (SR/Shelton, CT) RBI-single to give the Panther's a 3-1 lead over USMMA.
USMMA responded back with runs in the fifth and sixth inning to tie the game 3-3. Starting pitcher for the Panthers,
Frank Fantino (JR/Nanuet, NY) was replaced by
Miguel Reyes(FR/Bronx, NY) at the start of the seventh inning. Reyes allowed two hits and two runs, which ended the game in USMMA favor, 5-3. Reyes took home his first loss of the season as a result.
Fantino pitched six innings, giving up three runs, 11 hits, and striking out five.
For USMMA, Timothy Arner took the win after pitching six innings. He struck out five and allowed five hits and three runs.
In game two,
Dan Lombardo (FR/Oceanside, NY) and
Aryn Giddens (SR/Queens, NY) both sent bombers over the left field wall resulting in their first home runs of the season. Lombardo's homer took place in the third inning and was the first run of the game.
USMMA Warren Hartmann answered back with a home run at the top of the fourth.
A
John Jonas (SR/Goshen, NY) single RBI in the bottom of the fourth and Gidden's home run in the fifth would give the Panthers a 3-1 edge over USMMA.
A wild pitch at the top of the sixth and four Panther errors in the seventh would send in four runs for USMMA, and end the game, 5-3, in favor of the visiting Eagles.
Skyline Pitcher of the Week,
Adam Brant (SO/Hyde Park, NY), took the loss for Purchase. He allowed five hits and five runs before being relieved by
Christian Knochen (JR/Cornwall, NY) during the seventh inning. Knochen only faced one batter before
Lucas Vaz (SR/Astoria, NY) took the with two outs left in the inning. USMMA had a SAC fly to bring in the final run before a ground-out to third base ended the inning.
The Panther's struggled to make a comeback in the seventh. Two fly-outs and a pop-up would result in three quick outs to end the game.
Purchase is set to host Albertus Magnus in another non-conference game Monday evening. The single 9-inning game will start at 8 p.m.
