Purchase, NY (Mar.18, 2013) – Purchase lefty Chris Nast threw six strong innings, allowing just three hits and no walks with four strikeouts, to lead the Purchase College baseball team to a 12-5 win over non-conference foe Manhattanville College Tuesday afternoon.

The Panthers improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Valiants fall to 6-4 overall.

Nast (JR/Pound Ridge, NY) gave up one earned run on one triple and two singles. He is now 2-0 on the season.

Offensively, Purchase had 11 hits, including a two-run home run by designated hitter Ronald Echavarria (SR/Bronx, NY) in the fourth which sparked a 3-1 Panther lead.

Four more Purchase runs with only one out left in the sixth would force three pitching changes for the Valiants. A Frank Fantino (JR/Nanuet, NY) single and back-to-back doubles down the left field line from Michael Skoller (SR/East Meadow, NY) and Robert Michael (FR/Lagrangeville, NY) gave the Panthers a 7-1 edge to end the inning.

Manhattanville battled to close the gap in the seventh. Four runs off three singles and two Panther errors left the Valiants trailing Purchase, 5-7.

The Panthers gave themselves breathing room with four runs in the ninth inning after hitting ace, John Jonas (SR/Goshen, NY), cranked a grand slam over the right field wall.  With the game out of reach, Manhattanville struggled to rally back in the bottom half of the inning as the Valiants fell by a final score of 12-5.

Junior Joe Pareres took the loss for the Valiants.  He allowed one hit and two runs (oneearned) in 2.0 innings of action. He struck out two of the eight batters he faced anddrops to 0-2 on the year.

The Panthers are back in action on Mar. 21 for the first Skyline Conference matchup against Yeshiva University at 10 a.m. The doubleheader will be hosted by the Maccabees, but played at Purchase College.
