Purchase, NY (Mar. 22, 2014) – The Purchase College and SUNY Old Westbury baseball teams entered today's doubleheader tied with identical 2-0 records in the Skyline Conference and the two teams didn't disappoint.  Unfortunately, Purchase came up on the short end of both games by the scores of 10-8 and 7-2.

With the losses, Purchase drops to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the Skyline, while Old Westbury advances to 5-12 overall and remains undefeated, 4-0, in the Conference.

Arismendy Nunez started on the mound for Old Westbury in the opener, earning his first win of the season.  He pitched 7.2 innings, allowing five runs, eight hits and striking out five batters.

Purchase took a 3-1 lead in the third off a Michael Piekarczyk (FR/Dudley, MA) RBI-single and a RBI ground out by designated hitter Ron Echavarria (SR/Bronx, NY)

Piekarczyk led the Panther offense with four hits, two runs and three RBI.

A big ninth inning for Old Westbury brought in four runners to score, giving the visitors a 10-5 lead over Purchase.

The Panthers attempted to rally in the bottom of the ninth with three runs off four hits but fell short, trailing Old Westbury 10-8 to close out game one.

Chris Nast (JR/Pound Ridge, NY) took the loss for Purchase.  He relieved Miguel Reyes (FR/Bronx, NY) in the seventh when the score was tied 4-4.  Nast went on to pitch 1.2 innings, giving up two runs, two hits, and walking three batters

In game two, Purchase struggled at the plate against Old Westbury pitcher Tim Ingram.  Ingram pitched all seven innings, allowing only four hits and two runs.  He totaled 14 strikeouts, four of which occurred in the first inning.

Dan Lombardo bunted his way to first to lead off the home team in the third inning.  He then stole a base after an Aryn Giddens (SR/Queens, NY) strikeout. Another RBI-single by Jay Ruiz (JR/Bronx, NY) tied the score at one.

In the top of the fifth, Old Westbury had three consecutive base hits.  Several Purchase errors would end the inning in favor of the visitors, 4-1.

Reyes was put in the game for Adam Brant (SO/Hyde Park, NY), but was taken out after one pitch. Lucas Vaz (SR/Astoria, NY) took his place and struck out his second batter. Later on, Echavarria smashed a long double R.B.I. to the outfield, to bring in the second run of the game.

Weather permitting, Purchase is set to host FDU-Florham in a single nine-inning game Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
