Hats Off: Purchase Baseball Opens Season With Doubleheader Sweep

Purchase, NY (Mar. 8, 2014) – The Purchase College baseball team opened the 2014 season with a doubleheader sweep (5-3, 12-0) against Lehman College Saturday afternoon. 

Purchase scored two runs in the top of the first inning on its way to the winning the opener. Elan Trischitta (JR/Saugerties, NY) and Leandro Francisco (SR/Bedford Hills, NY) brought in the earned runs off singles in the inning. Two Lightning errors in the fifth brought in another two runs for Purchase, followed by a RBI double by rookie Michael Piekarczyk (FR/Dudley, MA)

In the opener, Purchase ace pitcher Chris Nast (JR/Pound Ridge, NY) earned the win. He allowed three hits, one walk and struck out four in five innings.   

In game two, the Panthers got three runs in the top of the second inning to take an early lead. In the bottom half of the frame, the Lightning loaded the bases with one out, but could not push a run across. Purchase then got three more runs in the third inning and went on to take the victory.

Purchase scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 9-0 lead. Another two were added in the sixth to end the game, 12-0. 

The Panthers' four-run, fifth inning featured a Michael Sarni (SR/Shelton, CT) triple, a John Jonas (SR/Goshen, NY) double, a Michael Skoller (SR/East Meadow, NY) single and a Robert Michael (FR/Lagrangeville, NY) single. 

Jonas went 3 for 3 with five RBIs to lead the Panthers in game two.

Adam Brant (SO, Hyde Park, NY) started for Purchase and earned the win after throwing six scoreless innings. He allowed only three hits and three walks and struck out six. 

For Lehman, junior pitcher Wilfredo Gonzalez worked in and out of trouble, yielding four runs on four hits through five innings. Leadoff hitter Kevin Hernandez scored twice as teammate Michael Liang had Lehman's sole RBI.

Purchase will now host the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in a doubleheader matchup on Saturday, Mar. 15.
