(Apr. 18, 2014) – The Purchase baseball team ralled in game one and defeated Skyline Conference foe Farmingdale State 3-2 in nine innings before falling to the Rams 2-1 after 10 innings of action in game two.
With the split, the Panthers reach 12-10 overall and 9-4 in the league while remaining No. 1 in Conference standings. The Rams are now 18-10 overall and 8-5 in the Skyline.
In game one, Farmingdale took an early 2-0 lead, scoring runs in the first and third inning. A sacrifice fly by Michael Marino brought teammate Edward Bergmann in to score, earning the visitors their first run of the game. Bergmann later had a RBI groundout in the fifth which gave the Rams a 2-0 edge over the Panthers.
Purchase remained scoreless until a
John Jonas (SR/Goshen, NY) homerun started a three run Panther rally in the bottom of the fifth inning. A two-run RBI single by
Michael Sarni (SR/Shelton, CT) would bring teammates
Aryn Giddens (SR/Queens, NY) and
Jay Ruiz (JR/Bronx, NY) in to score as the Panthers took a 3-2 lead over the Rams.
Pitching ace,
Adam Brant (SO/Hyde Park, NY), threw a complete game to take the win for Purchase. He allowed only three hits, one walk, and struck out three in nine innings on the mound. Brant is now 3-3 on the season.
Game two had fans from both sides at the edge of their seats as game rolled into extra innings. Rams earned the first run of the game at the top of the seventh but the Panthers answered back in the bottom half after a Giddens RBI single tied the game at 1 apiece.
A Panther error and RBI single by Rams' Anthony Alvino brought home an unearned run in the tenth. The second baseman went 2 for 4 with one RBI to lead the Farmingdale offense in game two.
Purchase was unable to rebuttal in the bottom half of the inning as Farmingdale went on to win the game 2-1.
Christian Knochen (JR/Cornwall, NY) took the loss for Purchase after pitching 3.0 innings on the mound. He drops to 1-1 on the season.
The Panthers return to action next week as they faceoff NYU-Poly in a single, nine-inning game.
