Mansfield, Conn. (Apr. 2, 2014) – The Purchase College baseball team surrendered two runs in the first, three in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth, and could never mount a rally, losing an 11-3 decision to host Eastern Connecticut State University in a non-conference contest Wednesday afternoon.

The loss pushed the Panthers overall record to 5-7 on the season as the team heads into a string of Skyline Conference games during the next two weeks.

Against Eastern Connecticut Wednesday at Eastern Baseball Stadium, the Panthers got multiple hit games from first baseman Michael Piekarczyk (FR/Dudley, MA), leftfielder Dan Lombardo (FR/Oceanside, NY) and centerfielder Aryn Giddens (SR/Queens, NY), all of whom went 2 for 3 on the afternoon.

Eastern, currently ranked ninth in New England and now with a 9-4 overall record, was led by senior leftfielder Nik Ververis, who collected his team-leading seventh multiple-hit game of the year, and junior righty Tyler Cyr, who pitched the first six innings for his first win of the year.

Batting .419 (13-for-31) in his last eight games, Ververis singled and scored in a two-run first inning as the No. 2 hitter in the lineup, knocked in a run with a single in a three-run second, and doubled in a run and scored in a four-run fourth that upped the Warriors' lead to 10-2.

Trailing 5-0 after two innings, Purchase got two runs back in the third on a double by rightfielder Leandro Francisco (SR/Bedford Hills, NY) and a two-run single by Lombardo.

The Panthers scored their only other run of the game in the eighth inning.  Lombardo tripled and then came home when Eli Sayad (FR/Wayne, NJ) grounded out to short.

Four Purchase relievers – Andrew Fingerhut (FR/Smithtown, NY), Christian Knochen (JR/Cornwall, NY), Lucas Vaz (SR/Astoria, NY) and Miguel Reyes (FR/Bronx, NY) – limited Eastern to one run on four hits over the final five innings.

The Panthers return to conference action Friday evening when they take on NYU-POLY in a doubleheader that starts at 6 p.m. at Purchase's new baseball stadium.
