(Oct. 18-19, 2015) – The Purchase College golf team took third between Sunday and today's second round of the Skyline Conference Championships at Brynwood Country Club.
The Panthers entered the finals as the fourth seed and finished third on Monday, posting a two-day aggregate score of 334/328 = 662 at the 6,348-yard course.
"We knew that with the qualifying system we just needed to be one of the top four teams," explained
Panther head coach James Alfredo.
"We practiced very hard these past few weeks knowing that we can make some noise, but once the tournament started, we realized that it was not going to be easy. The weather over the duration of the event was brutally cold with a breeze out of the north and temperatures in the high 40s. In fact, during round one, it flurried for about a half hour."
Purchase was in fourth after Day 1.
"It was disappointing seeing our team score, because I know that we are better than that," said standout
Rory Mazur (SR/Ridgefield, CT), who finished as an All-Skyline 1st Team selection, leading the Panthers in the finals.
"My hand is pretty banged up," added Mazur of a recent injury that limited his play, "but I had a nice group of campus supporters following me all round, which was inspiring."
Day 2 saw the Panthers holding steady on the tough Brynwood layout.
The round was delayed for two and a half hours because of frost. The Brynwood maintenance staff were the heroes, as they worked diligently to prepare the course.
"The wind was down, but it was still cool, and the greens had sped up to about 13 on the stimpmeter, so you really needed to think about where you wanted to hit your ball into the green on your approach shot," said
Michael Allar (SR/Thornwood, NY), who carded an 87/86 = 173.
"I am proud of all of the players who competed in this tournament, because it was a true test of patience and perseverance," Alfredo said. "I am proud of
Joseph Troop (SR/Stamford, CT) for bettering his score by nine shots in round two.
"And for
Rory Mazur's All-Skyline selection by coming in a tie for second individually. Now it's time to reflect upon our accomplishments, and to make assessments for the future."
Four student-athletes from the St. Joseph's College-Long Island placed in the top-eight during the two-day finals, as the Golden Eagles shot a plus-71 631 to capture the conference title and earn an automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships.
Farmingdale State's Scott Sessions was named Player of the Year after earning medalist honors with a plus-6 146 score on the tourney, while Old Westbury's Andrew Pohalski (165, +25) took home Rookie of the Year accolades. Tom Azzara of Farmingdale State was named Coach of the Year by his peers.
