Baseball Splits Weekend Conference Games

Game 1 vs. CMSV
Game 2 vs. CMSV
Game 1 vs. MSMC
Game 2 vs, MSMC

West Harrison, NY (March 28-29, 2015) – The Purchase baseball team split both games of its two doubleheaders over the weekend.

On Saturday, Purchase had its four-game win streak snapped with a 17-7 loss to The College of Mount Saint Vincent in Game 1, but rallied for an 8-1 win in Game 2.  The Panthers followed a similar pattern on Sunday as they dropped Game 1 to Mount Saint Mary College, 6-5, but took home a 10-6 win in Game 2.

In Saturday's opener, Purchase jumped out to a 2-1 lead after an unearned run scored in the second inning and a Billy Kaul (JR/Eastchester, NY) double brought Mathew Chavez (JR/Queens, NY) in to score in the top of fourth.  The lead was short-lived, however, as the Dolphins broke the game open with 11 tallies in the bottom of the fourth to open a 12-2 lead.  Cristian Lynch started the scoring with a run scoring double and was one of eight Dolphins to drive in a run in the inning.  Joseph Senisi closed out the scoring with a three-run home run in the frame.

After Purchase scored two runs in each of its next two at-bats and a single run in the top of the seventh, Mount Saint Vincent put the game away with five tallies in bottom half of the inning.   Senisi drove in his fourth run of the game when he was hit with a pitch before Casey Surdi drove in two runs with a single and Nicholas Pace ended the game with a two-run double.

In Game 2, Purchase pitcher Miguel Reyes (SO/Bronx, NY) allowed only two hits in the first four innings, swaying the Dolphins scoreless until the bottom of the fifth.  The Panthers drove in five runs in the fifth and added another in the sixth to take home the 8-1 win.

Reyes pitched a complete-game, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out seven batters.

On Sunday, Purchase tallied a quick three runs in the opening inning of Game 1.  The Panthers held the lead until Mount Saint Mary tied the score, 4-4, in the bottom of the seventh.  Purchase added a run in the ninth but the Knights drove in two in the bottom half of the inning to end the game in their favor, 6-5, respectively.

Jacob Vazquez (SO/Cortlandt Manor, NY) was tagged with his first loss of the season after allowing three runs, including the winning run, on three hits in one inning on the mound.

Game 2 opened up with a five-run first inning for the Panthers.  The inning was highlighted with doubles from Chavez and Chris Triano (JR/Greenwich, CT) and a three-runner homer hit by first baseman Elan Trischitta (SR/Saugerties, NY)

The Knights tied the game at five in the fourth inning but another five-run Panther rally in the fifth would carry them until the end for the 10-6 victory.

Weekend aces included Triano who went 7-for-13 with seven RBI, two doubles and a homerun, along with Teofilo Ramirez (JR/Queens, NY) who went 6-for-9 with three doubles, two RBI and three stolen bases in three games for the offense.  Ramirez started on the mound and took the win for Purchase in Game 2 against the Knights.  Andrew Fingerhut (SO/Smithtown, NY) was tagged with the save after he relieved Ramirez in the fifth inning.

Purchase returns to action at home on Tuesday with a non-conference game against Albertus Magnus starting at 4 p.m.
