(April 13, 2015) – Strong pitching efforts by
Jon Deacon (FR/Lindenhurst, NY) and
Jacob Vazquez (SO/Cortlandt Manor, NY) and timely hitting by the Panther offense carried Purchase College to a 6-2 victory over Manhattanville College in a non-conference baseball game on Monday evening.
Deacon gave up only one earned run on five hits while striking out two over six innings, earning his fist collegiate win in the effort. Vazquez (2-1) earned his first save of the season after coming in from the bullpen to open the top of the seventh inning. He gave up only one hit while striking out two of the visiting lineup.
Purchase took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as
Mathew Chavez (JR/Queens, NY) hit an RBI single to left field to bring
Ryan Aponte (SO/Bronx, NY) in to score from second base.
The Panthers extended their lead to 2-0 in the home fourth after an error by the Valiants' shortstop allowed
Michael Tecci (SO/Stratford, NY) to score.
Manhattanville answered back in the top of the fifth with two runs off three hits, making it a tied game, 2-2. Jake McGrath tallied the first run off a Panther error and a Chris Lattarulo RBI single to right field brought teammate Bobby Guerra in to score the second run.
Purchase had a scoreless fifth inning but rallied for a four-run sixth inning to take the lead 6-2. Tecci tallied the first run after advancing home on a throw to second base. Chavez earned his second RBI of the game with a single that brought
Ronald Pressley (SO/Bronx, NY) in to score.
Anthony Bambach (JR/Yorktown, NY) came around to score on a passed ball for the third run and a RBI single from
Robert Michael (SO/Lagrangeville, NY) would bring in the final run of the inning.
The Panthers gave up only one hit and held Manhattanville to scoreless eighth and ninth innings to end the game, 6-2, in favor of Purchase.
Manhattanville's Anthony LoFaro was tagged with his first loss of the season after yielding five runs (four earned) on nine hits with three walks over five innings on the mound.
Purchase will return to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon with a non-conference home game against Western Connecticut State University. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
