Farmingdale Sweeps Purchase

Farmingdale, NY (April 19, 2015) – Panther baseball dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader to Farmingdale State Sunday afternoon. 

The Rams (13-13, 7-5 SKY) shutout the Panthers (9-13, 5-7 SKY), 10-0, in the opener and tallied a 5-2 win in Game 2.

In the top of the first, the Rams jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by senior center fielder Anthony Alvino.  After a Michael Marino infield single, freshman second baseman Domenic Palumbo stole home to increase the lead to 2-0. An unearned run put Farmingdale State on top 3-0 before left fielder Richard Sullivan hit a RBI triple to left center which scored junior first baseman Dalton McCarthy. Sophomore designated hitter Matteo Gaudio and sophomore catcher Kenneth Johntry each followed with RBI singles to give the Rams a 6-0 lead.

Farmingdale added a run in the bottom of the second on a RBI single to center by Marino.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Rams took an 8-0 lead after a sac fly by sophomore third baseman Charles O'Neil.

Farmingdale added two runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn the 10-0 run-rule win.

Sophomore pitcher Matt Seelinger earned the win after allowing no runs on two hits, striking out nine in seven innings of work.

Panther pitcher Jacob Vazquez (SO/Cortlandt Manor, NY) was tagged with the loss after giving up 10 runs on 20 hits over 7.1 innings on the mound. 

In game two, Purchase gained an early 1-0 after Robert Michael (SO/Lagrangeville, NY) doubled to left field and later advanced home on a throw to second base. 

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, the Rams tied the game on a Palumbo sac fly to center. Marino followed with a RBI single to center which scored Johntry and gave Farmingdale a 2-1 edge. In FSC's next at-bat, McCarthy hit a RBI single to right field to increase the lead to 3-1.

The Panthers closed to within one after scoring a run in the top of the fifth inning off a Jay Ruiz (SR/Bronx, NY) RBI groundout to third base.

In the bottom of the sixth, Ryan Osborne was hit by a pitch and sophomore designated hitter Nick Osburn tripled to right center to bring the Rams lead back to two, 4-2. Farmingdale added the final run of the game off a RBI single by Tom Rydzewski.

Freshman pitcher Ryan O'Connor recorded the win and improved to 4-1 on the season after two innings of relief allowing zero earned runs on one hit.  Alex Pangourelias earned his fourth save after pitching a perfect 1.1 innings to close out the game.

The Panthers next will travel to William Paterson University for a non-conference game on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
