Redding, CT
(Sept. 8, 2018) – Western Connecticut State University defeated Purchase College, 378-395, at Redding Country Club on Saturday.
WestConn's Giovanni Luongo Michael Madden tied for third place with a score of 91 while Marco DiNardo finished in fourth place with a card of 93.Â
Purchase College's
Simon Montalvo (FR/New York, NY) handed in a match-best 82, 11 over park, while
Joseph Hart (SR/Riverhead, NY) finished in second place with a 90.
The Panthers opened the fall season at historic Redding Country Club. The 6,320 yard, par-71, Rees Jones design, golf course flexed its muscles and proved to be a tough test for all of the players.
"These players are real troopers," said Purchase
head coach James Alfredo. "They battled a tough golf course where two thirds of the holes have blind shots, elevation changes up and down of some 50-80 feet, in rainy conditions. The last two groups finished in heavy darkness, but we are glad we got it in.
"It's a golf course that if you haven't played it, you could lose a bunch of shots not knowing how to pull the right club," Alfredo added. "Par was definitely in the 80s today."
Montalvo was low medalist, leading all scorers. Hart followed. "I hit the ball well but the course played difficult," Hart said.Â
Returning starters,
Will Burger (SO/Albany, NY) and
Dylan Curran (SO/Yonkers, NY), did not participate.
The shot of the day was from Montalvo, who sprayed his tee shot on the 389 yard uphill, Par-4, seventh Hole to the right onto the second fairway. "Coach and I were trying to figure out the yardage to the green. Since it was a blind shot we figured that my line was over two trees up around the green just over 200 yards. I hit a 6-iron and when we got up there my ball was two inches from the cup … Tap in birdie," Montalvo explained.
Rounding out the scoring for the Panthers was
Stephen Javakian (SO/Long Beach, NY) with a 109,
Gunnar Hassard (FR/Oneonta, NY) with a 114 and
Matthew DeWaters (SR/Rochester, NY) with a 125. "We wanted to get these guys playing right away," Alfredo said. "They have been performing very well in practice. We are very happy for them, that they persevered in tough conditions and we will be looking forward to the next match as a team."Â
When DeWaters was asked of the team's potential he said, "Sweet."
Next stop for the Panthers is the Mount Saint Mary Invitational in Newburgh on Friday, September 14.Â
