GREENWICH, Conn. - The Purchase College golf team concluded its season by splitting a pair of contests Monday afternoon, as the Panthers hosted the Purchase Invitational at Tamarack Country Club in Greenwich, Connecticut.
The hosts finished with a score of 366 on the day, which topped the College at Old Westbury, but was significantly behind the winning Knights of Mount Saint Mary College.
Results
Under beautiful clear skies, the 6,538 yard, Par-70 golf course was a challenge for all of the golfers on the day ... except for the fab five of Mount Saint Mary, as the team cruised to a win with a score of 314.
"We have been eyeing this event all year and were very excited to play this course," said Matt Higgins (SR/Meriden, CT) of Mount Saint Mary, who carded a 77 for the day. "We took one look at the immaculate tee boxes and we knew it is a special place."
For the Panthers, sophomore
Simon Montalvo (New York, NY) capped his second-year campaign with a great performance, finishing tied for first with a 76. Afterwards, Purchase College head coach
James Alfredo had nothing but praise for Montalvo and the rest of the team.
"We are very happy with all of the players' efforts, including our
Simon Montalvo, who shot a low round of 76. Montalvo was two-under-par after three holes and carded three birdies in all on holes 1, 3, and 17."
The three other members of the Purchase team score included captain
Dylan Curran (JR/Yonkers, NY) with a 93,
Matthew Girardi (JR/Pound Ridge, NY) with a 97 and
Matthew Matera (SR/North Salem, NY) with a 100.
"It was an exciting finish for us," said Curran. "After four scores, we were down 11 shots for second place and Matt Matera, who played in the fifth spot, bettered our team score by 12 shots to edge out Old Westbury for second place."
Following the match, Alfredo said, "It was a great day to compete as we were surely blessed to play under normal conditions. Tamarack (Country Club), which is the fourth-ranked course in Connecticut, was the real winner today."
With the results, the Panthers wrapped up their 2019 campaign with a 1-5-1 record, but certainly gained a lot of experience and potential to build on for the future. Next year, the team is set to return seven of the eight golfers from 2019, as Matera was the only senior.
