NEW YORK
(Dec. 10, 2011) – Baruch poured in 10 of its first 12 3s in Saturday's showdown with visiting Purchase.
The hot start lifted the Bearcats to an 80-68 win.
Baruch's Chris Beauchamp scored 25 points and Jason Berliner came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points in the afternoon victory at the ARC Arena. The Bearcats shot 56.7 percent in the opening stanza to build a 46-37 lead. Although the visiting Panthers also shot the ball well – 55.2 percent in the first half – Purchase never recovered.
Ironically, both teams shot poorly in the second half, but the Bearcats were able to consistently hold a double-digit lead behind solid defense. The Panthers were able late to cut the score to 72-66 with 4:12 remaining, but the Bearcats responded with a layup by Beauchamp followed by two free throws and a layup by Nate Young to pull out the victory.
Justin Person (JR/Greenburgh, NY) led Purchase with 17 points and six rebounds. Fellow reserve,
Amar Reynolds (JR/Bronx, NY), added 16 points.
Purchase will return to action following the holiday break, when the Panthers host William Paterson on Dec. 30.
