Amar Reynolds, Purchase got the better of its annual “Battle of the Panthers” with Old Westbury Tuesday night on the road, upending the hosts 99-85 in a Skyline Conference matchup.
In defeat, Old Westbury falls to 11-11 on the season and 8-7 in conference play, while Purchase improved to 10-11 and 8-6, respectively.
Old Westbury took a 7-2 lead to open the game before Purchase replied with a 15-5 run to take a 17-12 advantage with 13:11 showing on the clock.
Purchase built their lead up to 21 points off a 26-8 run from 11:17 to 4:02, grabbing a 43-22 advantage.
Old Westbury chipped away to cut the deficit down to 12 off an 11-2 run from 3:29 to 1:24.
Purchase scored the final four points to close out the half, holding 49-33 advantage into the break.
Old Westbury put together a 15-3 scoring spree from 9:42 to 5:24 to chop their deficit down to six, 72-66.
Purchase replied and built their lead back up to double-figures at 3:13 on a pair of free-throws by
D.J. Smith (Saugus, CA).
Purchase hit 15-of-18 from the free-throw line over the final 3:13 of the game.
Kerel Mitchell paced Old Westbury with 26 points on 11-of-22 shooting from the field to go along with eight rebounds and four steals. Jamal Little scored 13 points and blocked two shots off the bench while Rob Sanders added 10 points.
Reynolds (JR/Bronx, NY) led Purchase with a game-high 30 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Justin Person (JR/Greenburgh, NY) followed with 22 points and eight boards while
Craig Davis (JR/Queens, NY) and Smith scored in double-figures with 19 and 10 points, respectively.
Smith finished with a game-high six assists and
William Williams (JR/Bronx, NY) nabbed six steals off the bench.
Purchase outshot Old Westbury from the field 50.9 percent (29-57) to 47.1 percent (33-70).
Old Westbury connected on 11 of 34 from three-point land while Purchase hit 7 of 11.
Purchase won the boards battle, 39-33, while both teams drew even off the offensive glass. Purchase converted 17 Old Westbury turnovers into 18 points.
