Purchase, NY
(Feb. 8, 2012) – Men's volleyball never got going Wednesday at home, falling in three straight sets to visiting Sage.
The Panthers fell 25-12, 25-16, 25-21, dropping their third conference match of the season. Purchase is now 1-3 overall and 0-3 in league play. The victory improved Sage to 4-3 on the season and 3-1 in the Skyline Conference.
Purchase seemed like they never caught up to the Gators' pace, as many of the Panther points came off Sage's errors.
Though the Panthers had a higher kill percentage(.415 to .271), Sage didn't leave many balls to be volleyed, nearly every ball they hit was a frozen rope.
The two catalysts for the Gators were junior middle hitter Spencer Hilland with 11 kills and 11 digs and sophomore Scott Fitzgerald, who had a game-high seven aces and was right behind Hilland with 10 kills.
Leading Purchase was
Kevon Kareem Bruce (SR/Hayes, Jamaica) with eight kills in 19 attempts.
Bruce was the energy of the team, but couldn't rally his squad enough to make a comeback against an efficient Gators squad.
After Bruce, the towering rookie
Blake Borysewicz (FR/Brooklyn, NY), provided some life for the Panthers, recording seven kills in nine attempts.
Setter
Alex Billen-Calhoun (JR/Niskayuna, NY) once again led the Panthers in assists, notching a team-high 20.
A match that took a little over an hour to complete was a dissapointing loss at home for Purchase that could have been a momentum starter.
Purchase has a chance to move up in the conference rankings as they host a Skyline tournament this Sunday.
