Purchase, NY (Mar. 10, 2012) – The women's softball team opened the 2012 campaign on a high note Saturday at Purchase, taking the first game of their spring season against CUNY rival Lehman College.

The Panthers (1-1) won the first game of the twin bill 10-9. The Lightning (1-1), also playing their first games of the spring, slipped past the Panthers in game two, 7-6, but overall it was a fine day at the park for Purchase.

The home team trailed 4-0 after the first half inning in the opener, but the Panthers showed their resolve and chipped away at the deficit. The Panthers' tenacity was on full display late, reeling off six runs between the fifth and sixth innings before captain Jennie Angelone (SR/Howard Beach, NY) provided the game-winning RBI in the seventh.

Angelone, Abigail Katz (JR/Livingston, NJ) and Christine Leo (SO/Monroe, CT) stole the show for the Panthers. Katz and Leo each recorded four hits in the first game, with Angelone and ace pitcher Linday Froman (SR/Medina, NY) contributing three hits apiece in the comeback affair. The persistent offense backed Froman, who earned her first win of the season on the mound, navigating in and around trouble, while pitching to the scoreboard in the opener.

Leo, the team's slugging first baseman, drove in six RBI in the first game. With the defense and Froman anchoring a nice start to the spring season, Leo took care of business at the dish. Katz and Angelone keyed the top of the order and Leo and Froman were “run producers,” head coach Albana Krasniqi said.

Offensively, the Panthers kept rolling in game two. Angelone and Katz added two more hits to their credit, including a double apiece, while Leo and newcomer Christina Sanderson (SO/Schaghticoke, NY) also pounded two RBI each.

A five-run fifth inning spoiled a near sweep for the Panthers. Lehman starter Natalie Martinez drove in three runs and earned the victory on the hill.
