Win Third Straight; Gear Up for Rival Yeshiva Sunday

Brooklyn, NY (Mar. 15, 2012) – Men's tennis stayed hot Thursday, reeling off their third straight victory of the spring campaign.

The Panthers (3-1) soundly defeated Brooklyn College, 9-0, on the road at the Roosevelt Courts on the campus of BC. For the Bulldogs (0-1), Thursday was their season opener – a match that was spoiled by the red-hot Panthers.

“It was a good practice match for us going into our first conference contest against league rival Yeshiva University on Sunday,” said Purchase head coach Peter Nestel. “Last year's early season meeting with YU, which we won 5-4, ended up being the deciding match for who went to playoffs.”

Nestel said the team is primed for a showdown Sunday and utilized Thursday's contest as a “warm up.”

Purchase took the early advantage by sweeping doubles play to go up 3-0 against Brooklyn.

The visitors would use their momentum from doubles and continue to dominate singles action by taking all six flights en route to its 9-0 win.

“This was a rough loss for us,” said Brooklyn head coach Ahmad Odetalla. “We dug ourselves into a hole in doubles and couldn't find a way to recover.”

Even with a different lineup, Purchase still dominated Thursday. Brenden Keeling (JR/Ontario, Canada) and Simon Lai (JR/Garrison, NY) teamed for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Ben Ekis (SR/Rochester, NY) and Chris Matchneer (JR/Larchmont, NY) followed with an 8-2 win at No. 2 and the tandem of Michael Sorge (FR/Bronx, NY) and Carl Ackley (SR/Shoreham, NY) earned an impressive 8-1 win.

In singles, Keeling topped Brooklyn's Matthew Micharlsen 6-0, 6-1; rookie Sorge downed Anthony Chan 6-2, 6-3; Ekis kept rolling himself, winning 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) in the matchup of the afternoon; Lai won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5; and Ackley and Matchneer finished off the afternoon sweep with wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Ackley won 7-5, 6-0 and Matchneer produced a 6-4, 7-5 victory.
