Purchase, NY (Mar. 17, 2012) – Women's softball had the game-tying run get thrown out at the plate in game two of their softball doubleheader with Brooklyn College Saturday at home.

The Panthers (1-3) fell 8-0 in the opener of the twin bill and narrowly fell short, 6-5, in game two.

Starter Lindsay Froman (SR/Medina, NY) allowed eight runs in the first game. In game one, Brooklyn (4-2) was paced by leadoff hitter Kim Konklewski (three hits) and Tara Diesel (2 for 4 with two RBI). Stephanie Caravello added three RBI.

In game two, Purchase responded to the challenge and played much better. Skyline Conference Player of the Week Christine Leo (SO/Monroe, CT) moved from first to the mound and pitched a solid ballgame, allowing six earned runs over seven innings. Four of the seven were scoreless frames for Leo, but the Bulldogs erupted for four runs in the third and added single runs late in the game to escape with the win.

Purchase managed eight hits in game two and easily could have split the doubleheader. Trailing 6-1 in seventh, the Panthers rallied for four runs before Rachael Popovic (SR/Baldwin, NY) was thrown out coming home in what would have been the tying run in the last half of the seventh. Christina Sanderson (SO/Schaghticoke, NY) singled and plated the first run in the inning. Shortly later, Abigail Katz (JR/Livingston, NJ) drove home two on an RBI double and Popovic also brought in a run before a ground out and a play at the plate ended the game in dramatic fashion.

Katz and Sanderson were the hitting stars of game two, with Katz driving in two and Sanderson leading the way with two of the team's eight hits.

Although it may not be reflected in the box score, Leo continued to sting the ball at the plate. In addition to her prowess at the plate, Katz played well defensively in the field, starring at center and shortstop in game two.

For Brooklyn, Caravello spearheaded the offense with three hits in the second game, while teammates Diesel and Maria Mantagas each recorded two RBI apiece.

The Panthers will look to rebound Wednesday on the road at John Jay.
