Purchase, NY
(Mar. 21, 2012) – Limited by injury and some unfortunate changes to its roster the past two weeks, Purchase lost 3-0 to NYU-POLY Wednesday night at home, despite a bounce back effort in games two and three.
The Fighting Blue Jays captured the match 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-16) to improve to 7-13 overall and 4-8 in league play. The Panthers are now 2-14 on the season.
The biggest blow of late is the absence of standout setter
Alex Billen-Calhoun (JR/Niskayuna, NY). Billen-Calhoun suffered a bad ankle sprain in the team's last road outing and is now sidelined for the next two weeks. He will miss the remainder of the regular season.
However,
Taylor Edelmann (JR/Bethel, CT) and the rest of the squad did their best to overcome the loss of their star setter. Edelmann, who switched from outside hitter to setter in place of his teammate, led the way, handing out a team-high nine assists. Edelmann, who also netted two solo blocks on the evening, has quietly put together a very solid season.
Mateo Morel (SR/Bronx, NY) and
Christian Cepeda (SR/Port Jefferson Station, NY) contributed two and three kills, respectively as the Panthers opened with a rough start, but rebounded as a team to hit .250 and an impressive .429 in the final set. Morel also led the team with one block solo and two block assists.
Thomas DeCarlo (SO/Glen Cove, NY) and
Jeromy Barton (JR/Mahopac, NY) also played well, while newcomer
Aiden Kaplan (FR/North Bellmore, NY) got his first action of the spring season since returning to the lineup.
Star middle hitter
Blake Borysewicz (FR/Brooklyn, NY) continued his strong play in the month of March with a team-leading five kills.
NYU-POLY was led by Nick Cervasio and his six kills. Three others finished with five apiece. Setter Rishi Sarkar totaled 18 assists in the victory. The Fighting Blue Jays hit .258 as a team.
The Panthers have three matches remaining in addition to one reschedule with Yeshiva University. No official date for that matchup has been announced just yet.
