Purchase, NY
(Mar. 25, 2012) – Conference elite Sage College took both ends of a twin bill Sunday at Purchase.
The Gators opened in a 13-1 run-rule and capped the sweep in another five-inning run-rule, 20-5. Game two featured five home runs for the visitors. The victories improved Sage to 14-4 overall and a perfect 4-0 in Skyline play. Purchase is now 2-8 and 0-4 in conference.
Sage opened the first inning of game one with one run off Panther starter
Lindsay Froman (SR/Medina, NY). The Gators began with consecutive hits. With one out, four-hole hitter Meg Welcome doubled home the game's first run for a quick 1-0 Sage lead.
Froman avoided any further damage, pitching around four hits in the first inning. She struck out Kristen Beikirch to end the inning.
The Panthers countered with a leadoff single by
Abigail Katz (JR/Livingston, NJ). Katz stole second base and was moved to third on a ground out by
Christine Leo (SO/Monroe, CT). Froman then helped her own cause, singling through the middle, plating Katz with the tying run.
But the Gators answered right back in the second. Back-to-back singles, including a slow roller in the infield put runners at first and second with no one out. Sage's Tiffany Bezio then tripled in the right field gap, scoring both runners as the Gators recaptured the lead. Leadoff hitter Rachel Smith followed with an RBI single, pushing the lead to 4-1.
The Gators manufactured a run in the third inning, utilizing another infield single followed by a stolen base, passed ball and wild pitch to make it 5-1. Sage kept rolling in the frame, adding two more runs on an RBI triple by Tiffany Bezio. The inning was marred by poor defense as the Panthers committed two errors. The errors opened the floodgates. Backed by two more run-producing doubles, Sage took a commanding 11-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the third.
Sage starter Kelsey Newberg tossed scoreless innings in the second, third and fourth. Reliever Jessica Saburro came on and pitched a scoreless fifth to close out the win. The Panthers stranded a runner at first in the last half inning, but nearly started a rally if not for a running grab by right field defensive replacement Lisa Eytel. Eytel robbed
Mariel Perez (SR/Queens, NY) of a run-scoring extra base hit.
Froman pitched a scoreless fourth, but allowed two insurance runs for the Gators in the fifth on a two-run home run by designated player Karli Williams.
Sage was paced by Williams and Bezio in the opener. Williams totaled three hits and three RBI and Bezio recorded three hits and four RBI.
For the Panthers, Katz had two of the team's three hits in game one.
Cassandra Armstrong (SO/Schenectady, NY) got the start in game two. Sage picked up where it left off in the opener as Smith, who would get the start for the Gators in game two, helped her own cause immediately. She homered to leadoff the game.
Three Panther errors in the first keyed another strong start for Sage. The Gators led 6-0 after the top half of the first.
Smith retired the side in the bottom of the inning and the Gators continued their surge in the second, adding four runs, highlighted by a home run by Williams – her second of the afternoon. Two walks to start the inning got Armstrong in trouble. Welcome singled home those two runs before Williams connected on another long ball.
Sage would homer again in the second. Following a two-out single, Bezio tagged another two-run shot for a commanding 12-0 lead in the second. To top it off, Smith homered yet again – back-to-back shots – increasing the lead to 13-0. The two-out rally continued with three consecutive singles for the Gators' 14th run.
Purchase got on the board in the bottom of the second. A leadoff walk by Froman and a single off the bat of
Alyse LaPadula (SR/New Rochelle, NY) put runners at first and second with no out. A sacrifice bunt by Armstrong brought home Froman for the Panthers' first run.
Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Sage, who added a single run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Smith. Hillary Faas brought around two more on a two-RBI single. Sage led 17-1 heading into the bottom of the third.
The Panther offense had their best inning of the day in the bottom half of the frame.
Christina Sanderson (SO/Schaghticoke, NY) tripled to the right field gap to leadoff the inning. An infield single by Katz plated Sanderson. Katz would then come around to score on an RBI single by Froman. Purchase scored two runs on four hits in the frame, stranding two runners in scoring position as Smith settled down.
Purchase just couldn't overcome the early deficit. Sage connected on its fifth home run of game two in the fourth. Following a leadoff walk, Beikirch blasted a two-run shot to make it 19-3. Another manufactured run in the inning and Sage led 20-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
It would stay that way until the fifth, when Leo singled, LaPadula walked and Perez tripled home two against reliever Saburro. Saburro would hold on though, finishing off the frame on a ground out.
The Panthers will now travel to SJC-BKLYN Tuesday.
